Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Saturday, Aug. 27, as of 1500 GMT.
U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.
An asterisk denotes a new or update item.
* QAIM - Two Sunni Arab tribes, one loyal to al Qaeda and the other to the government, clashed near Qaim in western Iraq on Friday and Saturday, killing at least 20 people and wounding dozens, local clerics and hospital officials said.
BAGHDAD - The U.S. military said it had freed 1,000 detainees from Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison at the government's request, the largest release to date. It came after Sunni Arabs had asked for prisoners to be freed so they could participate in a constitutional referendum and elections. Sunni Muslims make up a large bulk of Iraq's prison population.
KIRKUK - An Iraqi army officer was assassinated by gunmen near his home in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk, police said.
MOSUL - U.S forces killed two insurgents in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on Thursday including Abu Khallad, a Saudi national, who was believed to be a major facilitator of foreign fighters and suicide bombers to Iraq, the U.S military said.
KIRKUK - A roadside bomb targeting an Iraqi army patrol near Kirkuk's University wounded six soldiers, five of them seriously, police captain Salam Zangana said.

U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.
BAGHDAD - Two Iraqi policemen were killed and one was wounded when gunmen fired on their patrol in the al-Adil district in west Baghdad, police said.
FALLUJA - Three Iraqi policemen were found shot dead in al-Therthar, 20 km (12.43 miles) north of the town of Falluja west of Baghdad, police said.
MOSUL - Three people were killed and four wounded when a car driven by a suicide bomber struck a U.S. patrol, police said. A U.S soldier was wounded in the attack, the U.S military said.
KIRKUK - One insurgent was killed and another wounded when U.S. forces and Iraqi police stormed a house in Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, on Saturday, the U.S military said. Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Monday, Aug. 29, as of 1500 GMT.
U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad. * FALLUJA - Police said they had found 13 bodies in three western towns, Falluja, Saqlawiya and Karma. It was not clear who they were or how they had died.
BAGHDAD - Mohammed al-Haidari, the brother of Baghdad's former slain governor was assassinated by gunmen in a southwestern Baghdad neighbourhood, an Interior Ministry source said.
BAGHDAD - A police Brigadier who worked for Iraq's independent electoral commission was gunned down while driving in his car near Baghdad's Aathamiya district, police said.
MOSUL - Four Iraqi civilians were wounded when a mortar round fell on a bus station in the northern city of Mosul, a hospital official said. (Reporting by Faris al-Mehdawi and Maher al-Thanoon in Mosul).

U.S. and Iraqi forces are battling a Sunni Arab insurgency against the Shi'ite and Kurdish-led government in Baghdad.
An asterisk denotes new or updated items. * HUSAYBA - A U.S. military statement said it had killed an al Qaeda militant named Abu Islam and a number of other fighters in air strikes on Husayba and Karabila close to Qaim on the Syrian border, west of Baghdad. Mohammed al-Aani, a hospital official in Qaim, said at least 35 people died in one house and another 12 in a strike on a second house.
BAGHDAD - The chief of police in the Ghazaliya district of western Baghdad was killed and three of his guards were wounded by gunmen in the western district of Baghdad, a police source said.
KIRKUK - Police said a security official in Iraq's North Oil Company and a companion travelling with him in a car were killed on Monday night by gunmen in the city of Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad. Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Saturday, Sept 3, as of 1215 GMT
AD DULUIYAH - The U.S. military said one insurgent was killed and another wounded when the roadside bomb they were assembling exploded in Ad Duluiyah, 40 km (25 miles) north of Baghdad, on Thursday.
*FATHA - Exports were halted on a major Iraqi crude oil pipeline from Kirkuk to Ceyhan in Turkey after a roadside bomb exploded on Saturday morning in Fatha, 95 km (60 miles) southwest of Kirkuk, a guard on the pipeline said. The fire was later extinguished but an oil ministry source said exports stopped completely.
BAQUBA - Four Iraqi soldiers were killed by gunmen at a checkpoint 30 km (18 miles) north of Baquba, which is 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
BAQUBA - In a separate incident, six Iraqi police were killed by armed gunmen at a check point in central Baquba, police said. (Increasing death toll to six from four)
*BAQUBA - Seven Iraqi policemen and two soldiers were killed and two policemen wounded by gunmen in a joint checkpoint manned by Iraqi police and army 4 km south of Baquba, a hospital source said.
*BAIJI - Five Iraqi soldiers were killed and nine wounded by a roadside bomb in Baiji, 180 km (112 miles) north of Baghdad, on Friday, police said.

Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Sunday, Sept. 4, as of 0700 GMT.
KIRKUK - An Iraqi army lieutenant was shot dead by gunmen in central Kirkuk, 250 km (150 miles) north of Baghdad, on Saturday, police said. His wife was badly wounded.
BAGHDAD - The Muslim Clerics Association said it discovered the bodies of two Sunni clerics and three other men in a morgue in Baghdad, three days after being arrested by interior ministry troops.

Asterisk denotes a new or updated item. * HIT - An Iraqi government statement said 8 civilians, 3 Iraqi soldiers and 3 insurgents were killed, and 16 Iraqi soldiers wounded, by a suicide car bomb targeting a Multi- National Forces military base in the town of Hit, west of the capital. * BASRA - Two British soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in the flashpoint city of Basra, 550 km (340 miles) southeast of Baghdad, Britain's Ministry of Defence said.
BAGHDAD - Two policemen were killed and another five wounded when up to 30 gunmen in 10 cars opened fire on Iraq's Interior Ministry at around 6.15 a.m. (0215 GMT), police and Interior Ministry sources said.
KHALIS - Police said a mortar bomb fell on a residential area of the town of Khalis, north of Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding four. * BAGHDAD - Four U.S. soldiers and three civilians were wounded when a suicide car bomb targeted a U.S. convoy in the southern al-Saydiya district of Baghdad, police and the U.S. military said.
TAL AFAR - Seven insurgents were killed on Sunday after they engaged Iraqi and U.S.-led troops with heavy machine guns and rocket propelled grenades in the Sarai District of Tal Afar, north of Baghdad. A U.S. military statement said on Monday that "terrorists operating from within a mosque described as a Takfirist meeting place were killed." There were no reported U.S. casualties. * TAL AFAR - Two civilians were killed and another nine wounded on Sunday night during combat operations in the town of Tal Afar, northwest of Mosul and north of Baghdad, medical sources said on Monday.

BAGHDAD - Two U.S soldiers were killed and two wounded by a roadside bomb in central Baghdad, the U.S military said in a statement.
TAL AFAR - A U.S soldier was killed on Monday in the northern Iraqi town of Tal Afar when his vehicle was struck by an explosive device.
* RAMADI - A U.S. soldier was killed when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb on Monday 110 km (70 miles) west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said in a statement.
BALAD - U.S forces killed 11 insurgents and wounded four when responding to insurgent mortar fire on their base near the Iraqi town of Balad, 70 km (44 miles) north of Baghdad, the U.S military said.
KARABILA - The U.S. military said it killed two foreign fighters and detained three in a raid on a house near Karabila. One soldier was wounded. The house was then destroyed by an air strike.
KARABILA - The U.S. military said it bombed two small bridges near Karabila, close to the Syrian border. The bridges were used to move foreign fighters and equipment across the river Euphrates into central Iraq, it said in a statement.
DHULUIYA - An Iraqi army officer was shot dead by an unknown gunman while returning home from work on Monday in Dhuluiya, 40 km (25 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
SAMARRA - Iraq's North Oil Company said an oil pipeline west of Samarra was set on fire late on Monday. The line carried crude from Baiji to Baghdad.
BAQUBA - Police said they arrested two insurgents who had kidnapped an Interior Ministry engineer near Baquba. Police chased the kidnappers and after a brief firefight released the engineer and detained the insurgents.

Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Monday, Sept. 12, as of 1330 GMT.
RUSTUMIYA - Seven unidentified bodies were found in the town of Rustumiya, southeast of Baghdad. An Interior Ministry source said their hands were tied and they had been shot in the head.
BAGHDAD - Six civilians were killed and another two wounded when gunmen attacked an estate agent's office in the Shu'la district of western Baghdad, a police source said.
KIRKUK - Two policemen were killed and three civilians wounded by gunmen in the downtown Wasiti district of Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of the capital. Police Lieutenant Colonel Yadikar Mohammed said the dead, a father and his son, were in charge of guarding the city governor's office.
FALLUJA - At least six Iraqi soldiers were killed or wounded by a roadside bomb that hit their convoy in Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, a police source said.
IS'HAQI - A senior judge from the northern Iraqi town of al-Dawr was assassinated with his brother by gunmen in the nearby town of Is'haqi on Sunday, police said.
BALAD - Iraqi police found the bodies of two Iraqis in the Tigris river running through the town of Balad, 65km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
ISKANDARIYA - An Iraqi contractor working for the U.S. military was found dead 75 km (47 miles) south of Baghdad. Police said he had been blindfolded and handcuffed.
BAGHDAD - Approximately 2,300 people were detained in August on suspicion of supporting or conducting attacks against U.S. and Iraqi forces, the U.S. military said in a statement.
It said 1,085 were released the same month, adding that around 50 percent of all suspects detained are freed after investigations find there is insufficient evidence to hold them.

Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Tuesday, Sept. 13, as of 0700 GMT.
HILLA - Two civilians were killed and 13 wounded when a man travelling on a bus, carrying a bomb concealed in a large sack of flour, stepped off the bus before detonating the explosives in the Shi'ite city of Hilla, police said.
FALLUJA - The bodies of three Iraqi civilians shot dead by insurgents were found by Iraqi police on the highway just north of the town of Falluja, police said.
BAGHDAD - A suicide car bomber blew himself up on Baghdad's western outskirts on Monday as he approached an Iraqi army checkpoint and a second bomber was arrested before he could detonate his vehicle, the defence ministry said. Following are security incidents reported in Iraq on Monday, Sept. 26, as of 1200 GMT.
BAGHDAD - At least 10 people were killed and 30 wounded when a suicide bomber rammed his car into a bus carrying employees of Iraq's oil ministry near a police academy, police and witnesses said.
BAGHDAD - Three U.S. soldiers were killed in two separate attacks in the southeast and west of the capital. "Two U.S. Soldiers died when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device early Sept. 26 in western Baghdad," a U.S. military statement said. A third U.S. soldier died when his vehicle struck a roadside bomb 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Baghdad.
BAQUBA - A local official was killed by gunmen who shot him in the Hashimiya district of western Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad. A police source said Ra'ad Hussein was in his shop when he was attacked.
KIRKUK - An oil official said a pipeline junction on Iraq's crude oil export line to Turkey was bombed and nine employees of an oil complex were briefly detained by insurgents in the city of Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad.
BAGHDAD - An Egyptian man was kidnapped by unknown gunmen in the capital. Police said the man was travelling in a black BMW with an Iraqi friend when gunmen opened fire, took the Egyptian away and left the Iraqi behind.
