Chris Ryan ~ The one that got away
At one point I was really interested in the SAS and read all the books on them, and about 4 of them were about McNab's patrol in Iraq in 91. Ryan's story was very impressive, even though there are some differences between McNab's and Ryans account of what went down I tend to lean more tworads Ryans story. That man is truly one to look up to. He went through hell and back in just over a week.

For goodness' sake, don't look to Beevor for an authoritative account of Stalingrad...
He is not, and should not be considered a true military historian.

how's generation kill?
I'm reading it now. A very interesting "warts and all" account of the invasion of Iraq. It shows the shocking incompetence of the leadership as opposed to the bravery and skill of the troops. Alot of personal accounts of things like killing civilians and how they deal with it and the underhanded tactics of the Iraqi army/insurgents.
Well worth a read.

Yes, because he says bad things about Soviet soldiers, and examines war from the human perspective as well as the strategic

No, it's actually because his sourcing is unprofessional, his remarks dishonest and his representation of objectivity merely flawed AT BEST.
Those seriously interested in the battles of Stalingrad and Berlin should steer well and truly clear.
