Ok, here's the deal.

I have a home built computer that i've been using for a couple of years now. It had a DVD drive, a CD-RW drive, and a Maxtor 80 gig HDD hooked up to my IDE deals.

My old computer, a Dell, had a Maxtor 60 gig HDD. I just took it out, and decided I wanted to put it in my newer homebuild PC.

The first problem was that my homebuilt PC's power supply only had 3 of the power things that would fit into a HDD or Disc drive, and they were all in use.

So, I decided to unhook the power supply from my DVD drive and use it for my new HDD. But it was too far away. The master was hooked up to the CDRW drive, so I had to move the CDRW drive down a few bays in order for the power plug to reach the HDD. I also had to change the IDE plugs so that my CDRW drive could still be hooked up (space saving issue).

Now, when I boot up, the computer refuses to recognise I have a new HDD plugged in. It just wont recognise it. Any clue why?

Yes....sounds like you'll need to adjust your BIOS settings.

On the HD, check your jumper settings for primary or slave drive.

Has to be set to the right one for its spot in the IDE chain.

or switch jummper to "cable select", then your disk should configure automaticaly, but I never tried that trick so i don't know if that works, as they say be my lab buney :)

This is probably the issue.

You may well have to set the jumpers on both the old drive and the new drive. The one you had in there before you want to set to master and the one you just put in should be set to slave.

The jumper is the little thing on the back of the drive near the power / IDE sockets. There's probably a note on the label on the top of the hard drive that tells you where to put the jumper depending on what setting you want the hard drive to be on.

Good replies most likely both drives are set to "Master"

Either set one to slave OR put them on cable select and select which one you would like to boot off of in your BIOS under boot order
