Yes, most of those pictures were published in RAIDS magazine before, around 1995.

The first GIGN Gendarme to enter the hijacked Airbus in 1994 choose to be armed with nothing but a French-made Manurhin MR73, knowing he was going to be faced with FOUR terrorists armed with AKMs and UZIs...

To the best of my knowledge (could be wrong), he fired six rounds, hitting three of the four terrorists before falling, hit by several 7,62 mm rounds.

At the end of the plane take-down, no Gendarme and no hostage had been killed but all four terrorists were dead .

Is it just me, or does the idea of using a full length shotgun in a cramped airplane cabin just seem impractical?

Even though these are old pics, why are they using revolvers and not pistols?

revolvers are more reliable, have a better tolerance for different amunition types, are heavier(for clubing) and are in general, bad-ass. but i also am puzzed as to why gign seems to be the only one using them still.. maby im wrong about the above post.

It's a personal choice; the GIGN gendarme have an absolute confidence in their shooting abilities and in the past 30 years it has never proved ill-founded.

They can chose the weapons they like anyway; but the MR73 is the symbol of the GIGN (even though it's also used by the Austrian Cobra group), and it's a statement; it means I don't need 15 rounds because anyway I hit every time and six are enough.

Sounds cocky but when you have the track record of the GIGN, you can trust them.

This is the first GIGN mission that made them famous; since they've done everything from planes take-down to natural caves hostage rescue, the Mecca rescue mission in support of the Saudi government (the GIGN members had to be made "honorary moslems" to have the right to enter the holy shrine where the hostage taking was happening...), Basque terrorists hides assaults, jail riots...

Djibouti - Hostage taking of children's bus by the FLCS.
February 3, 1976

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On February 3, 1976, in Djibouti, several thousand kilometres away from france, thirty french children are taken hostages in a school bus by terrorists of the FLCS (Front of Liberation of the Somalian coast) near the Somalian border. Seven hours later, in battle dress similar to that of the legionnaires of the 13è DBLE (which are already in position), GIGN gendarmes equipped with FR-F1 sniper rifles takes position, camouflaged in the desert, 180 metres away from their targets.
In and around the coach, there are eight terrorists, and further away a number of Somalian soldiers are apparently supporting them . Wait is going to last two hours. Finally the signal of the shot is given: the six FR-F1 fire at the same time, and four terrorists collapse with a bullet in the head. A fifth is shot down while running away. But the Somalians answer with heavy weapons including an MG42 MG. The legionnaires fire back and within minutes, thirty Somalian soldiers are killed. The three last ones terrorists are shot by the GIGN snipers during the exchange of fire, but one of them regrettably had the time to fire a SMG burst at the children, killing a girl. With this baptism of fire, the GIGN has just made known itself from the whole world.

Shotgun are commonly not used against personnal but against material (door...). So it's more a tools than a combat weapon.

And in the mind of the gign the shotgun efficiency is too fuzzy. Joining the mean of the use of the old MR73.
With the MR73 you can chose to neutralise or kill your opponent ( a shoulder at 50m, why not?), if you use the shotgun against a man it's overkill, you can't choose clearly where you shoot.
But now you can use bullets or plastic bullets.

And last note, I think the MR73 is the most accurate and reliable revolver.
I try it on day. Shoot my 5 first round of .357 and made at the first try a groupment of 10cm (or a cigarette box) at 25m. Impressive!
I've didn't try the last model of Smith & Wesson, but I don't think to make mistake. In the other hand the MR73 need high end maintenance because of its low tolerances.
It's an old legend like the Sig P210/6. I like them, I want them.

Oh, and forget one point :

A favorite method of the gign, like the story of the jail rebellion.
They moved in the sight of opponent in helicopter, the GIGN men showing there most terryfing weapons. Result, the rebels surrender without fight.
Use a shotgun give you a psychological effect that can avoid you to shoot.
Never forget they are here to save people, not to kill. (but sometime the opponents cross the line and can't give the another choice than kill them...)

www.gign.org <--- MANY pics here! woot wow :D I was pleasantly surprised to see Israeli krav-Maga featured prominently there as part of their training.

Also I know that certain French units are using the Israeli made RLEM (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6620&highlight=simon) and I also remember reading a while back that even though France and Israel don’t have good relation’s (ever since 1967 and France giving their support only with the Arab states against Israel ) nonetheless the Mossad and the French equivalent of it have had good and corporative relations.

I am curious since I am on this subject, does any of the French members here know of any other security corporation that takes place between both countries?

Shalom :D

There are israeli officiers at the french senior staff course. There are a number of visits between the two countries too; and the GIGN also used the Matilan urban camouflage for a while.

krav-Maga is rude and basic.

But efficient. That's all !
