PAKISTAN -- The US has provided eight long-range maritime patrol aircraft free-of-cost to Pakistan Navy giving a major boost to its ability to carry out long distance surveillance as well as fire Harpoon missiles at enemy targets.

The P-3C Orion aircraft "are being provided free-of-cost by the US Navy and the expenses for modification of aircraft avionics systems will be met mostly from the US military aid," a Pakistan Navy (PN) statement here said today. P-3C Orion is a long-range maritime patrol aircraft with an endurance of about 18 hours and can carry Harpoon missile.

With the induction of eight P-3Cs, the existing fleet of PN-P-3Cs will grow up to 10. Two P-3Cs already with PN are presently undergoing overhaul in Pakistan with US assistance and are expected to be operational by the end of this year. "The title of these aircraft has been shifted to PN with signing of the transfer documents by the representatives of US and Pakistan Navies, making the aircraft a property of the government of Pakistan," the statement said.

Appreciating the US assistance, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Shahid Karimullah has termed the acquisition of the aircraft as a significant achievement, the statement said. He expressed confidence that the induction of these aircraft would augment the PN capability to actively monitor its areas of interest at sea and add a new dimension to the offensive punch of its fleet.

This has a typo. It should say "Chinese targets."

Think again - is Pakistan realy likely to attack Chinese targets?

1. China is Pakistan's other main weapons provider.
2. Pakistan and China have a common (albeit mountainous) border, thus making Pakistan very vulnerable to Chinese attack
3. I would see an ability to launch Harpoon as being far more appropriate to counter the major naval power and traditional enemy situated to the south-east of Pakistan.

If those Harpoons are going to be used against anybody it will most likely be against India. Like DeltaWhisky58 already pointed out, China is Pakistans other weapons source and probably its longest ally (China's been a reliable source of weapons for 40 years). Pakistan has also either licensed produced or jointly developed weapons with China such as the K8 trainer, f-7/FC-1 fighter, Al-Khalid and the Type 85IIAP tank.

What made you think they would be used against China?

I'd rather we gave the planes to India.

I'd rather we gave the planes to India.

India should out-source its national defense to US, as much as we out source our Call Center/teachers/IT jobs to India.

It was a joke! I could have picked India, but we don't have a beef with India. I picked China because they share a border with Pak, and Afganistan doesn't have a Navy! :D
