Mexico (5-1-1) still needs another point in its final three games to make Germany 2006. Its coach, Ricardo Lavolpe, was not impressed by the winners.

"The U.S. is a small team," he said. "They play like my sister, my aunt and my grandmother."

His females relatives must be some badass footballers! Talk about sour grapes.

Are there any professional American players in places where soccer is a serious sport?

Ouch. If his team can't beat his sister, aunt, and grandmother, how do they expect to make it to the World Cup?

I honestly don't know that much about the team, but I do know that our starting keeper, Kasey Keller, played for a long time in the English Premier League, and now plays for a team in the German Bundesliga. I think we have some other players with European clubs.

Yes. American players play in England (Fulham, Manchester United, Man City et al.), Germany and Holland, as well as other countries like Belgium.

The US is the real deal -- get used to it.

Proof will be at the cup.

These qualifiers go back and forth with teams not bringing their best players, or their A game.

No, the game last night was played in Columbus, Ohio and had mostly U.S fans, and some Mehico fans. Casey Keller had a couple of nice saves and the Mexican team played pretty sloppy and payed the price for it. The game you are referring to was the last meeting in the summer which was played in Mexico City were the classy people of Mexico City chanted "Osama" "Osama". The U.S team is for real this year (it only took 30 g-dam years!) and is gonna put a dent in the competition. I personally, wanna see them hand Brazil, their head in a paper bag, for the loss back in the '94 cup semi's.

you mught have to wait a wee bit longer for that....Brazil might be fielding their strongest team in years at the next world cup (crap they even have TWO good goal keepers!)...at the recent confederations cup Brazil crushed Argentina 4 - 1 and Argentina was playing really well leading up to that game....the US is good and getting better but they have the benefit of playing in one of the weakest zones..as long as they continue to play at current levels they are garunteed to qualify (and so is Mexico)...but i'm glad the US won mexico talks too much crap considering they have only won once in the last few years....

Kasey Keller plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach and lives in my city somewhere 15 minutes from here.

Howard's been dropped from the first team (replaced by van der saar) and Spector who barely played has been packed off on loan somewhere.
As it is US players are still on a par with South Korea. Personally I think the US should try their hardest before China turn their intrest to football and win everycompetion for the rest of eternity (or at least unitl there is a European team).

As for results, the USA already qualified for their 5th or 6th WC in a row and were unlucky to lose against Germany in the quarterfinals last time.

I'd say that's pretty impressive for a nation in which soccer is not taken seriously.

Last week Brian McBride scored for Fulham, Claudio Reyna scored for Man City, Demarcus Beasley scored for PSV, etc.

American soccer is looking pretty good.

a country is never mesured by how well they're players work in foreign clubs. My point being that McBride, Reyna and Beasley may all be good at scoring goals in their club teams because they are given good service and protected from defeat by good defenders. So national teams should be judged by just that the team. And to top it off the US has had no big stars of the game yet.

The number of world cups qualified in a row is null and void as far as I'm concerned because the US can qualify without breaking a sweat in the Concacaf division. The US and germany had the easy side of the draw in the last world cup, the proof we beat Germany 5-1 in munich in world cup qualifiers. And weren't that far off containing Brazil but despite being a far better team we only got as far as the US because we got drawn against Brazil early.

Macs.

Dude, our national team is like that:

Good - Really Bad - Very Good - Bad - Very Good - Very Good - Very Good - Really Bad - Really Bad

It changes every week.

Yes we reached the final and you didn't. We beat "easy" teams that were obviously hard enough for others. (korea) And we played at least a good final. Germany played well but lost. I know it's hard for a brit to see germany in the final. We were just lucky, i know. Btw if i remember right we just allowed one goal before the final. :P

I hope we meet next year. (in Berlin!) And then your goalie is helped up:

You're missing the point here Winston. Our team is pretty damn good despite the fact that no one here even likes the g-dam game until the World Cup is on. Our kids don't play it in the school yard at lunch break or get together after school for a match. Oh, and no one here gives a sh!t about your EPL. You can have your team of primadonnas, I'll take a group of scrappy uderdogs anyday. So SHADDUP!!!!!

england v. germany make the best finals, probably the most deserving countries. mind you lot have the advantage nowadays with a population (80 million vs 50 million) it was better when it was England vs. West germany.
