Simple question to answer. Those behind him were not his intended targets.

The shooting range could be two areas where their backs meet, or back to back.

By the way, what is that AK74?

Great real life soldier pictures!

One question: In photo S_PIC00088.jpg, the interior view of the vehicle. Just below the steering wheel on the left; there appears to be a black coil.

What is it's purpose? Is is a heater coil?

Thanks!

Little history for you all
AK-47s have milled recievers and heavier parts. They are not used and made in Russian since late 50s.

Mikhail Kalashnikov simplified the reciever by making it stamped. He also simplified other parts, including wooden furniture and even the magazines. The new simplified stamped version was named AKM (Avtomat Kalashnikova Modernezirovanni) basically modernized version of AK .

here is a Type 1 AK47 the first one.
http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/images/0501.jpg
http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/images/0503.jpgnotice the reciever is heavy

and here is the AKM
http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/images/078.jpg
http://www.aa-ok.com/AK-47a.jpg
http://www.aa-ok.com/AK-47e.jpg

in 1970s Kalashnikov was asked to develop a smaller caliber version of 7.62 AKM. The Soviet government saw that AMericans switched to smaller 5.56, and wanted to keep up with them.
So Kalashnikov took the AKM, and rechambered it to 5.45x39. On top of that he designed a new muzzle break/compensator, which is known to be the best muzzle device on the planet.
Here is AK74
http://kalashnikov.guns.ru/images/096.jpg

AK-47S was the folding version. The buttstock would fold under the gun. And later AKM adopted the same idea
AKMS
http://www.kalashnikov.us/akms_icon.jpg

However when paratroopers requested a version of AK74 with a folding stock, a completely new design was introduced.
AKS-74
http://www.milparade.com/kalashnikov/chapter4/04_35_01.jpg

In mid 70s Izhmas stoped producing the AKM and all the rifles in 7.62x39.
They focused on 5.45 AK74s and RPK74. However the 7.62x54R was still in production. PKM and SVD.
In the early 90s Russians took the AK-74 and decided to mdernize it, by adding black plastic furniture, lighter materials on internal parts, and the new version of the buttstock. The decision was made to make all modernized AK-74s with folding stock.
The new model was called AK-74M

You guys are in for creating a massacred in Gaza. A lot of those Palestinians are terrorists sympathizers and likely going to respond to your pressence. You might just as well as to kill everyone that moves or breath out cardon dioxide in there other than yourself. As well Remember on the average, each household owns a weapon. Going in there is like invading Texas, where high density of "hardcore"NRA members is located. You are in go a lot of troubles. After the battle, you can consider yourself made out of lead. That is going to be fun. Where can I join?

By the way, do not mess with Texas. I do not know why, but that is what people say. I say it just want to be cool.

"So this ak is only a ak74 without the muzzlebreak and it uses 5.54 ammo?"

No.

As PermskiiOMON mentioned, the first AK was of milled steel and is generally identifiable because it has a large rectangle indentation above where the magazine is inserted. The muzzle brake is just a nut and has a vertical front face and just protects the thread at the muzzle of the rifle... ie it is not really a muzzle brake, just a nut to protect the thread.

This was replaced by the cheaper, easier to make and lighter AKM. The AKM is identifiable because the indent above where the magazine is inserted is a small oval shape about the size of your thumb. When they designed the AKM they also designed a reduced weight magazine that is bright red and is made of aluminium and plastic. The problem is that these magazines are standard 7.62 x 39mm mags for the AK Series, so they can be fitted to AK-47s, AKMs and the 7.62 x 39mm versions of the AK-100 series. The later AK-74 was also issued with bright red mags made of the same materials and these can be used on an 5.45mm cal AK series weapons including the short barrel AKS-74U and LMG RPK-74. The Current mag that is made in both calibres is a dark brown and is lighter than the steel mags, but stronger than the red mags and cheaper to make.

Because the magazines are interchangable they can not be used to identify the different models. The AK-74 has the same dimple above the mag as the AKM but has the new muzzle brake.

So to simplify, large rectangle indentation above mag housing and milled receiver = AK-47 (with folding stock = AKS-47). Small indentation and angled muzzle brake = AKM (with folding stock = AKMS). Small indentation and large muzzle brake = AK-74.

(Note also that the AKM in the photos above has its stock more in line with the barrel than the AK-47... this reduces the kick upwards when fired.)

The obvious problem with identification is of course that an AK-47 can be fitted with a red mag and an AK-74s muzzle brake. And worse, an AKM, which is otherwise hard to tell from an early AK-74 can also be fitted with a red mag and an AK-74s muzzle brake. Fortunately if you look at the magazines the AK-74 magazine has less curve than the 30 cal AKMs magazine. (The 5.56mm AK-100 series rifles have even less curve than the 5.45mm weapons).

GazB
01-26-2004, 02:14 AM
BTW nice website Uninen, though just at a quick glance regarding hand held ATGMs... why would you want to risk missing the target with an expensive guided weapon just so you can perch a weapon on your shoulder? And if you did the closest you'd get would be the Metis-M (AT-13).

Also there is a thread about the Kord HMG. The main reason it has been made is because the company that amde Utes is in the Ukraine. Both are better than an American 50 in the sense that when it comes time to change the barrel you don't need to use a head spacing tool or check the timing for the Russian weapons...

and the Germes ATGM is actually a very large weapon that is based upon the Vikhr ATGM carried by the Ka-50 Hokum helo. The land based version is called Pantsir-S1.

The muzzle brake is just a nut and has a vertical front face and just protects the thread at the muzzle of the rifle... ie it is not really a muzzle brake, just a nut to protect the thread. And this thread is sometimes used for flash hider (two versions - short and long for so-called AKMN or AKML version) or compensator.

Long flash hider at AKML

Compensator mounted on the Polish AKM

This was replaced by the cheaper, easier to make and lighter AKM. The AKM is identifiable because the indent above where the magazine is inserted is a small oval shape about the size of your thumb. And also three protuberances over the receiver cover.

The obvious problem with identification is of course that an AK-47 can be fitted with a red mag and an AK-74s muzzle brake. And worse, an AKM, which is otherwise hard to tell from an early AK-74 can also be fitted with a red mag and an AK-74s muzzle brake. GazB, thats very interesting, I've never seen AK or AKM with AK-74 style muzzle brake... any photos? The muzzle brake is designed to the 5,45mm rounds, not to 7,62mm.

This is the first time I heard about AK74-style muzzle brake for 7,62mm rounds... interesting. Maybe there are just some commercial models produced only for US civil market, never used in Russian (or any other East) Army?

"And this thread is sometimes used for flash hider (two versions - short and long for so-called AKMN or AKML version) or compensator."

The most common use for the average AK grunt user is to put on the blank firing attachment (usually silver). Less average grunts might fit a PBS suppressor, and some years ago I believe there was a cup launcher attachment (you loaded blank rounds and placed a live hand grenade in the cup and removed the pin... pulling the trigger fired the blank round and blew the grenade 100m or so.)

"GazB, thats very interesting, I've never seen AK or AKM with AK-74 style muzzle brake... any photos? The muzzle brake is designed to the 5,45mm rounds, not to 7,62mm."

I have a commercial one on my AK, but the AK-103 also uses the standard AK-74 type muzzle brake. The RPK-74 also uses a different flash hider to the others shown on this thread... a sort of short SVD flash hider.

"What for?"

From what I know about SNI units... probably to clean their teeth. :-)

"AFAIK lower caliber is more deadly than bigger one and 5.45 is more dangerous and do more damage inside body than 7.62"

In the right conditions that is true, but there are many conditions where high velocity small rounds are no good and slower heavier rounds are better.

""If you eat something was rejected by Ethiopians with them..."

What?"

MRE = Meals Rejected by (starving) Ethiopians. :-) US troops opinion of US MRE, though no doubt they have improved a bit by now (I hope).
