Suspected rebels kill six, injure 16 in Indian Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AFP) - Suspected Muslim rebels killed six people and injured sixteen in Indian Kashmir ahead of talks between moderate separatists and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi, police said.

Three brothers were shot dead at point-blank range in the southern district of Doda early Monday, police said, adding that two of them were policemen working with counter-insurgency forces.
"A major hunt has been launched to find the militants who killed the brothers," a police spokesman said on Monday.
In the same district police said suspected rebels shot dead a Muslim girl, while a middle-aged Muslim woman had her throat slit in the neighbouring district of Poonch late Sunday, also by suspected rebels.
Police also blamed militants for killing another Muslim policeman in the central district of Budgam late Sunday.
None of the dozen groups active in Indian Kashmir has claimed responsibility for the killings.
Sixteen people including two women were injured in a grenade attack by suspected Islamic militants near a busy southern town on Monday, the spokesman said.
He said the grenade missed an army patrol and exploded among pedestrians near the town of Shopian, 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Srinagar. There were no army casualties.
The meeting between moderate Kashmiri separatists and Singh is scheduled for Monday evening in New Delhi. Rebels and hardline separatists oppose the talks.
Tens of thousands of people have died in Kashmir since an insurgency against Indian rule began in 1989.
