View Full Version : Poll: Half of voters unwilling to accept a Jewish PM
poll commissioned by a British newspaper, the Jewish Chronicle, which serves the 300,000-strong Jewish community, claims that almost half of voters in the United Kingdom would be unwilling to accept a Jew as prime minister, and that one in seven believes the Holocaust was exaggerated.
The poll, which interviewed 1,007 people in England, Scotland and Wales, found that 47 percent were unable to agree with the statement: " A British Jew would make an equally acceptable prime minister as a member of any other faith."
Friday's Daily Telegraph suggested the findings could deal a blow
to the electoral chances of the current leader of the opposition
Conservative Party. Howard, a former home secretary, is a member of a reform synagogue. A spokesman for Howard declined to comment on the poll.
The poll, timed to coincide with Holocaust Memorial Day next Tuesday, also found that one in seven people in Britain believe the scale of the Nazi Holocaust against Jews is exaggerated.
The findings of the ICM survey showed that 15 percent of those polled agreed the scale of the Holocaust has been exaggerated. Seventy percent disagreed with the statement, and 62 percent disagreed with it strongly, according to the survey.
The poll also found 37 percent agreeing that Jewish people make a positive contribution to political, social and cultural life of Britain, with 20 percent disagreeing. Meanwhile, 18 percent agreed that Jews had too much influence, while 47 percent disagreed.
The polls comes at a time when, for the first time in
Britain's Home Secretary David Blunkett, interviewed by The Guardian, expressed his disappointment at the poll's findings.
"It means people are prepared to set aside not only the evidence, but the overwhelming emotion that goes with it," Blunkett said. "They delude themselves into believing that the Nazis are not what we know them to be and this is very depressing."

1,007 rofl I mean that gives a good indication of the 60 odd million people's views who live in the UK. Theres more Jews living in the UK than there are people interviewed. Personally i couldn't really care about what religion the British Prime Minister is as long as they're not like one of the slimy, lying, cheating, corrupt, incompetant pricks who are the current choices. I also don;t know of anybody who has ever said they would vote for a PM depending on his/her religion.
On to the Holocaust, i don't think the 6 million figure is accurate but i am undecieded whether the exact number is higher or lower. The point is that it happened, not how many died.
So...you seem to be unaware to the word "poll".

UoUo , I dont think that he is unaware of the word poll .. But you cant say that the poll is the voice of the whole nation , a poll will never work that way ... So no the people in the UK isnt Antisemitic , no the people dont think that the holocaust is exaggerated .. etc etc .
Britain's last Jewish Prime Minister...
Benjamin Disraeli (1804 -1881)

Thats right put the blame on someone else. You post a topic which has nothing to do with the military so your own reason for doing so would be to incite an argument. Well you got one and you obviously didnt like how it turned out so now your playing all innocent.
How would you like it if i posted a topic saying that a poll conducted in Isreal showed that out of the people interview 47% thought that the Isreali Government was allowing war crimes to be commited. You would quite rightly retaliate by criticising the poll and adding your own point of view. So don't get all self-rightous now.

There are anti-jews in every nation - fact of life unfortunately.
Until there was a sudden splurge of publicity on Mr Howard a few weeks back, most Brits were unaware of his religious origins, and would probably remain so. I say origins, because Mr Howard has stated that he is basically non-practising, i.e. although nominally a member of a synagogue, he is non-attending. IMO that makes him of the same status as me, although my origins are Church of Scotland.
Speaking as a patriotic right-of-centre Scottish-Brit, I have absolutely no problem with Mr Howard be he Christian, Jew, Muslim or whatever. It is his politics, and competence as a political leader and potential prime minister that is of concern to me.
Any competent politician who can rid us of our current megalomaniac, has to be worthy of consideration. He gets my support.

The next French president, if it's a conservative pdt, could very well be the current minister in charge of security, Mr Sarkozy; he is of jewish and Hungarian origin but it's not causing a problem in France since his policies are efficient.

Polls can be skewed, for the above poll just survey people in either a right of centre rural area or an area with high unemploment and a BNP councilor and you will get these results. I think many people in the UK would have issues with a black or asian prospective PM but religion would not be such a big deal, this poll runs counter to other polls this week many of which give Mr Howards party 40% of the vote (god f*cking forbid). :(
to Jooglae,
would a christian be elected prime minister of israel?
most countries have never had women leaders, does that really mean that the whole population represses women? I don't think so.
at least there has been a jewish PM, catholics (like me) are by law not allowed to be chancellor or PM, although that would no doubt change if it was challenged.
So do you understand if I take a dislike to these "polls" because they choose to highlight the fact that the last jewish PM was over hundred years ago, despite the jewish population of much less than a million. And then people like jooglae say
That's pretty sick......That there are still a lot of anti-semitists around.
We all know that fighting over race or skin color is stupid....
when yet there are 6 million catholics in Britain.
Let me just say **** you jooglae
if he answers back he's dead...
UoUo, are you aware of someone called Jack Straw? or 1007 is a small number for a national poll? or that the representation for the jewish community in parliament is MUCH better then any other ethnic minority, such as the black community. We have enough trouble as it is getting more ethnic minorities into government, and the whole time the one with the least problems calls us anti-semitic. Excuse us for being irrited by uncalled-for pestering.
I have stopped posting articles on the mistreatment of palestinians by the IDF because you lot take offence to it, please understand if we react like that when you try and push it in our faces. The fact that you can find articles on it on the internet does not mean it is true in reality AS
we keep being told if we read an article on the IDF.

I know but the point is it hasn't been removed yet because there hasn't been a catholic PM.

I agree I really do not think there would be any problems these days if a Catholic were to be PM, I remember years ago when Prince Charles had a bit of a thing going with some european princess and the news papers were ranting on how she was a catholic and would not be an acceptable bride, and now he has got the missus whacked and is living with some ugly old bird and no one is giving a f*ck.
