White Student Calls Self African-American
Friday, January 23, 2004
OMAHA, Neb. — Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award."
Peggy Rupprecht, spokeswoman for the Westside Community Schools (search) district, said administrators at Westside High School (search) discovered more than a hundred of the posters throughout the school first thing Monday — Martin Luther King Jr. Day (search).
"The content of the posters, they believed, was inappropriate and insensitive to some members of our school community," Rupprecht said.
Citing privacy policies, Rupprecht said she could not specify what the penalties were or how many students were disciplined. But the mother of the boy pictured on the posters said he was suspended for two days.
The award has been given the last eight years to an outstanding black student as part of the school's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, she said.
The poster pictured junior Trevor Richards, 16, smiling and making a thumbs-up sign. A message at the top encouraged votes for him for next year's award.
Karen Richards said her son and his friends were not trying to hurt anyone.
"My son is not a racist," she told the Omaha World-Herald. "He has black friends, friends from Bangladesh and Egypt. Color has never been an issue in our home."
"It was a very innocent thing," she said.
Two of her son's friends were disciplined along with him, she said. A fourth student was punished for circulating a petition Tuesday criticizing the practice of recognizing only black student achievement with the award, she said.
Tylena Martin, a junior, said the poster had been on the door to her homeroom class where she is the only black student. She said she felt hurt by the posters and the backlash that ensued.
According to 2002-2003 state statistics, 56 Of Westside's 1,632 students are black.
Hey, the kid is African American. Just points out the idiocy of our society.
I agree, where's the problem?

If the above quote is an example of your intelligence, you'd probably still be in the same school you're in regardless of race ;)

The kid is from South Africa. Thus, he is African...what the fook is the deal?
Maybe the posters had more than what they revealed on them?

i think is he is african american, then he should be eligible for the award. i think they should stop accusing him of being a racists, when it is evident that the schools are the one with the racial problem here.

Lol I have a friend whos South African and pasty as Elmer's Glue. As a joke he calls himself African American. Maybe they should rename it to Best Black Student.
One has to understand the reason why this is a sensitive issue. African-Americans have been denigrated with labels and names for centuries, and there is no need to list any of them here. If the kid came from South Africa or any other African nation and happens to be white and became a naturalized American citizen, he can call himself African-American; however, since the overwhelming majority recognizes that as a term denoting race in America, he or she should not be surprise by the negative reaction of others.

That's an interesting observation. Who's the final judge of what people "are"? Clearly certain groups receive preferential treatment - what are they gonna do , check a person's mitochondrial DNA to see how far removed they are?
The reality is that preference is granted based on what people look like. No school, employer etc. checks anything such as national origin, background, cultural affiliations, etc. A dark skinned person who's family has lived in Switzerland for 400 years can get preference as an African American? Yep.
The Germans in WWII put mixed race people up in front of a board to ascertain how many generations removed they were from the "impure" race d'jour, and then racially categorized them. Clearly we're now doing the same thing.

It's ironic, because the kid IS African American, but the kid they probably gave the award to was born in America and is thus NOT African-American.
Pretty sweet irony.

White south africans are either british or german afrikaner. So, scince many american born black people call themselves african american, yet not born i africa, its hard to say. Technically if your going all the way back to roots, black people trace back to africa, this kid traces back to german or british. So technically in my book, and many others he is not of african american ethnicity. And they probobly call him racist because many south african white people are...
I mean, many people call themselves german american, I consider myself Norwegian american... ect. But rarely are these people actually born in that country. So I think african american is a racial term. It is in my opinion a word that is for people who are black.

I agree, the kid oughta get the award. It didnt say BLACK student. it said AFRICAN AMERICAN. Last time i checked that includes any American of african descent, and S. Africa is in Africa.
To be honest, there should be A Black Student award. There isnt a white student award or a Hispanic student award.
Thats like at colleges, if your black you have a higher chance of being accepted. Thats rubish. Race shouldnt even be considered. It shouldnt even be asked for on an application.
And Hispanic people need to stop calling themselves a minority, because they are now the Majority in America.

I've always loved those terms : African-American, Italian-American, etc...If you live in America...You are an American (period). If, say, an American moves to Italy and decides to stay there forever, does that make him an American-Italian. C'mon ! Only in America do we get so stupid...er, I mean politically correct...

There have been white "Africans" for generations. They have a legitimate claim to the label.

considering how the origin of man is in africa, my original statement is valid. rolleyes to all you people who rolled their eyes.
the point is that there is no such thing as race. we all are related. in fact, i am more related to the african people than the polish people.
what's funny is that the people who propagate race the most are the people who pay so much to other persons' skin color. that's ironic.

The problem with many of the people, who like to call themselves "African Americans", is that they would tell me (as a Boer/White African) that I have no claim to Africa or African-ism, or that I, or my family should not even live in Africa. But my ancestors and Family have lived in Africa longer than most of their families (albeit by means of forced slavery) have lived in America. So does this denie them any claim to Americanism? - I say no. I would however say that someone who was born in Africa (whose family although white, have lived in Africa since the 1600's) and is now a naturalized US Citizen has more of a right to call myself an "African American." But I would say there is no room for hyphenated Americans in America. to quote Teddy Roosevelt: "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all... The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic... There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else." I would also quote another President I do not care so much for - Woodrow Wilson, although he was correct in this case: "Any man who carries a hyphen about with him carries a dagger that he is ready to plunge into the vitals of this Republic whenever he gets ready." I would of course point out to the Pan-African crowd that the idea of Africa being a mono-racial continent is ridiculous at best!!! as a matter of fact the Black (Non-Koi/San Bushman) South African Bantu have almost just as short a history in South Africa as the Boer. The Boer has a uniquely South African culture, language and history. To say that a Somali is the same race as a Congolese Pigmy or a Namibian or Western Cape Bushman, or a North African Tuareg or Egyptian Arab or Zulu or Cape Coloured from South Africa is ridiculous. To say that one has more claim to Africa than the other is racist and ridiculous! The problem with the use of the term "African American" in the US is used for leg-up "Affirmative -Action programs such as College assistance etc. These programs have been set up to assist the descendants of black slaves in this country as a form of reparations. The problem arises when it is used by new African immigrants, whose are allowed to use it simply because of the colour of their skin. While the new white South African Boer who immigrates to the US has no claim to any of these programs, once again simply because of the colour of his or her skin. The simple fact is that if you were born in America, then you are simply American. My first wife (from whom I was widowed), who was from Ireland - born and raised, used to tell your so-called "Irish-American", who were born in American that they were American NOT Irish! What is wrong with being just an American? - or are they hanging on to something in reserve, in order to deny their Americanism in the right circles at that Chardonnay/Cocktail party with all those nose in the air elitist Ivy-League douche-bags? Anyway, that's my 2cents on the matter!

It is, but it will never go away as long as nations accept its use.

Most Americans think that way. A lot of them are also too afraid of being called "racist" to say any different though....not me though.
