Marine copter crash kills 4 in California

(CNN) -- Four U.S. Marines were killed Thursday night when the Marine helicopter they were riding in crashed in Camp Pendleton in California, a military spokesman said.

The UH-1 Huey crashed around 7 p.m. (10 p.m. ET) in the northwest corner of the base, said Maj. T.V. Johnson of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. Three of the Marines died in the crash. A fourth died after being taken to a civilian hospital near Mission Viejo.

Investigators are looking into whether the helicopter hit power lines, said Capt. Shawn Turner, a Marine Corps spokesman in Washington.

Camp Pendleton is about 35 miles north of downtown San Diego.

Things like this scare the **** out of me, I'm going to camp pendleton for my basic.... I think there should be more higher standards for becoming ANY pilot, because the lives of the people on board are in there hands, if he makes a mistake, it affects everyone on board...

I personally dont feel this should be blammed on the pilot... UH-1's arent the newest of flying machines.

I don't think fresh LTs should be behind the stick...but that's just me. Flying is a team effort, the crew chiefs do a lot in terms of maintaining the aircraft and keeping it running fine.

 If military heliocopters crash everyday then i should be worry. Beside, you don't know if it's human error or mechanical error; just because you serve in the military doesn't make you immune from accidents like this.

The standards for pilot training are very high and they aren't exactly brand new lieutenants. All of pilots (USN and USMC) have a college degree and go through almost 2 years of flight school and training before shipping out to their respective squadrons. Accidents happen though. Pilots make mistakes. But you're more likely to die driving to work than riding in a helo.

True, but does anyone know what really happened? Was it a human error or mechanical?

Power lines are a threat to ANY aircraft flying between 350 feet and whatever the sea level is where you are. **** happens, I hate to say that in this case but it does. Besides, thats why all Navy and USMC helicopters have cable cutters above the cockpit and below the fuselage so if they do get caught they have a chance to survive.

Just a note here, back when my dad was a Cobra pilot in the Army, he and a flight of four including himself, were on a scuttle mission from I believe it was Fort Worth to Fort Bliss, Texas and one of his guys hit every single power line for 30 miles on the trip. The pilot didnt even know it until they landed and a report came out saying power was out for miles. They figured out that by the good grace of luck, the pilot hit the lines at the perfect airspeed at the perfect direction because the hinges on the glass cockpit on the AH-1G snapped all the lines without notice. One of the hairest things I know of as a pilot.

It should be pilot, co-pilot, crew chief, and if they were doing exercises then a door-gunner as well.

Damn it.

As stated in an earlier post, USMC pilots aren't yokels with a stick in their hands. They are the best.

Rest in peace, brothers.

^What he said.
@ FutureMarine and NCDeuce: To attempt to place blame on anyone at this point is really lame, especially if you don't have a clue as to the cause of the accident or the competence of the crew. Shut up and let the dead rest. :cantbeli:

I was not placing the blame on anybody, dumbass. If you read my quote again, I was pointing out that there are other guys on board the bird. besides the pilot and co-pilot.

I hate to sound disrespectful to this crew but I beg to differ, Army pilots(before the Apache days) are, or were the best chopper pilots.

Like I said dumbass, you don't know the facts in this case. You don't know the rank, age or quals of any of the crewmembers, and all you did is add some useless info to this topic to try to look informed, so again, STFU and let the dead rest.
