AFP - A majority of Americans see positive progress in Iraq, up since last autumn, with 51 per cent who believe US military operations are progressing "fairly well" compared with 22 per cent who see progress as "very well," a poll published found.

In October, only 16 per cent said the US effort in Iraq was going very well, compared with 44 per cent who said it was going fairly well, in an identical survey by the Washington based Pew Research Centre.

And those whose view of the situation in Iraq was negative fell in number to 24 per cent from 36 per cent last October.

The partisan gap between Republicans and Democrats over the Iraq war, which briefly narrowed when Saddam Hussein was captured in December, also widened again, possibly linked to the start of the presidential campaign.

Nearly two thirds of Americans, 65 per cent, still approve of the United States having gone to war in Iraq, similar to December figures. But only four Democrats in 10 - 42 per cent - now say they approve, compared with 56 per cent in December.

Republicans were almost unanimous in their approval at 89 per cent, however, and independent voter approval grew from 60 per cent to 66 per cent, the poll found.

Those polled had disparate concerns for the future of Iraq.

While nearly half of them - 48 per cent - were worried about US troops staying too long in Iraq, some 41 per cent were concerned they would leave too soon, before a stable democracy is installed.

The survey of 1,503 adults, taken from January 6 to 11, has a three per cent margin of error.
