US, TR Work Against Terror, No Operation on PKK
-AA
The US European Forces Commander General James Jones said the cooperation between US and Turkey is stronger than ever and the situation in northern Iraq is an issue which includes Independent Iraq.
Gen. Jones and US Central Forces Commander Assistant Lieutenant General Lance Smith participated in the two day long meetings in Ankara.
Jones issued statements to the press after meeting with The Turkish Chief of General Staff, Hilmi Ozkok.
Jones said they discussed the concerns of Turkey on the terrorist organization, Kurdish Workers Party (PKK), and global strategies towards the anti terror struggle.
The American General added that they have considered various concrete steps towards this purpose.
"Some of the military operations that US soldiers organize in Iraq require strong cooperation with Turkey. We have made productive discussions. Both sides confirmed the cooperation spirit. They have discussed some solid steps to be taken for this purpose. The cooperation understanding was empowered, we are sure of it."
Regarding the areas they will cooperate with the Turkish Army the General said: "We are developing our communication skills rapidly. There is an agreement to make changes in the intelligence services rapidly."
However, Gen. Jones did not accept an operation against the PKK.
"As for the situation in Northern Iraq, this is a situation which also includes the dominant state. The future of the region will be decided by the countries of the region, I mean Turkey, Iraq and US as much as it can help."
When a journalist commented that , "The Turkish public does not believe you will fight against PKK," Jones responded, "In Turkey or anywhere else, the public opinions should be assured that armed forces and security organizations do their best to struggle against terror. I am proud of the cooperation between Turkey and the US in the struggle against terror. Our relations are strongerthan ever."
General Staff Ozkok discussed the latest developments in Northern Iraq and included abolishing PKK/Kongra-Gel from the region and taking the necessary precautions to accomplish this purpose.
