Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Brown, under fire over his qualifications and what critics call a bungled response to Hurricane Katrina, resigned Monday, senior administration sources told CNN.
Brown was recalled Friday to Washington and replaced as the point main for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff named Coast Guard Vice Adm. Thad Allen to head Katrina relief efforts.
A senior administration official said Friday that President Bush approved Chertoff's decision.
Brown's reassignment came amid questions raised in Time magazine about whether his resume was padded to overstate his experience in emergency management. A FEMA official quoted in the report said Brown believes the article is inaccurate....

Finally.
"Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job," George Bush said last week. Just another indication that our Great Leader just doesn't get it :|

He should have been fired, not allowed to resign.

He should have been fired, not allowed to resign.
I agree. But regardless, he'll still be used as the whipping boy.

X3 I wonder if Bush will give him a medal for doing such a heck of a good job ;) When the press queried him about it in New Orleans today he didn't have a clue. He said the press probably knew more about it then he did because he was busy "working". :P
It's a good political move, though, because Brown has now been tagged as the scrapegoat. He will go down in history as being the square peg in the round hole at the wrong time.

Again Ill pose the question...why is this guy suffering because of the incompetence of the Mayor and the Governer?

Because they were Democrats and there's no way you can blame incompetent Democrats for anything.

Mailman, I suppose that if they were from the Right- Wing then it wouldn't be their fault either, you'd just find someone else to blame? The Governer and the Mayor only have so much that they can do, that is why the Federal Government had to step in. The Federal Government was incredibly slow getting to its feet, more so than usual. How is THAT they Mayors fault or the Governers fault?

I guess its the Mayor and Gov's fault because they not only f*cked around for so long but also failed to do their jobs in making the communities safe in the first place.
Its a bit late closing the barn door after the horsie has bolted.

Funding for the levee was cut by the Federal Government. Where they supposed to hold a bake sale?

Yep, he should have resigned sooner or been fired sooner. The fact he stayed around as long as he was, seams to suggest hes Bush's fall guy.

Where have you been recently? Strengthened levees would have done nothing as they were only ever going to be built to withstand catagory3 events and not the type of storm that hit

Absolutely ! I can't believe people are acting as if the failings of FEMA are exonerating the local and State authorities, or if these authorities's tragic shortcomings made the Federal Government totally faultless.
As often when we talk about human organization, it' not a question of EITHER A made mistakes OR B made mistakes, it's a question of everybody screwing up more or less completely.

they were already rated to withstand a cat3 storm. the strengthening was to upgrade them to a cat 5, which would have done the job.

They never were going to be strengthened to cat5 though...they were only ever going to be to withstand cat 3 storms.
