I just want to see what people think is the best general purpose machine gun. I only have the MG3, FN Mag, and PKM listed, but if you think there is a better one just list it and its specs. Personally I like the MG3 the best because it looks so bad ass.

The best GPMG would probably be the FN MAG (GPMG to the British, M240 to Americans). I've heard some very good things about the M60E4, but that's really intended as more of an LMG/SAW than a GPMG.

Singaporean Ultimax is said to be the most controllable of the lot.

The Ultimax is a LMG, not a GPMG... ;)

The only one i used is FN MAG , so i will have to go on this (lack of choice)-specially liked to play with fire-rate selector ;) . However , several units in IDF using PD as a squad MG , and not Platoon MG , and when i asked one of the PKM machineguners what is better, he said , that he will go on PD without a doubt .Unfortunatly he didn't supplied me with technical reasons ..

Tankers using slightly different modified variant of FN MAG.
But as far as i understand , South African Vector SS77 considered to be one of the best of it's kind , together with FN MAG , and german MG3 .
PKM. I have never fired the mg3, though, so it may be magic. But for me the PKM kicked the crap out of the 240.

I've only fired the MG3, so i couldn't compare. But for it's stupidly high ROF it's well controllable. But then again, IMO, the ROF is it's biggest problem, you end up burning through too many belts in too little time. However, i've heard you can get a light bolt fitted that decreases rate of fire to something similar to the MAG.

That is correct, I have seen that bolt (or part of bolt) on several MG3 in the Danish Army, actually it was a reversible bolt that depending on which way you turned you could have a ROF of either 1200 or 600.
1200 ROF is not a problem with proper training.

Their will soon be a competition between the SS77 and the MAG to replace the old ANF1 MMG in the French army; deliveries should start around 2008.
Actually it is a heavy bolt that reduces the rate of fire for the MG3.
I personally like the look of the new Pecheneg.
Specs are:
mv 825m/s
sighting range 1,500m
rof cyclic 650 rpm
practical 250 rpm
barrel life without changing barrel 25,000 rounds
weight 8.7kg

SS77 I would say, and for the sake of the french I hope so as well. But then again, if including politics, $$ and such then it might as well be the MAG.

It s about time, the ANF1, if not too bad, compared lets say to the m60, is still one of those funny conceived MG s.
Try to field strip and get the recuperator sring jump in your eye,it takes officially a minute to change the barrel, in fact takes for ever cause the lock suffers from dilatation when heated, and so on.
You my say it comes from no proper training, I used it for 13 month, and the MAG for 4 only, and get a much, but really much better touch with the MAG, no doubt.

That's right, you can even manage to do single shots with the MG3. 2- or 3-round-bursts ain't a big deal though.

The unlocking part of the barrel change procedure with the MG-3 is extremely simple.
Just push in the barrel locking lever on the right hand side of the barrel (provided you remember to push the safety knob on first) and the barrel swings out tho the right.
Then comes the hard part. Taking out the barrel and replacing it with a new one rofl.
As there are no carrying handle for the barrel you need either an asbestos mitten/rag or you have to use the multi-tool that comes
with the spare parts pouch for the weapon (which is a rather fiddly process).
The rate of fire of the thing is great however (from afar it sounds a bit like a woodpecker going on stereoids rofl).

only used one of the three, but i cant say a single bad thing about the MAG (specifically, the M240B) barrel change is insanely easy (push lever, twist/pull on carry handle, slide new one in til it clicks) comfortable, doesnt jam, and a basically fun weapon to fire. unfortunatly this debate is hard to solve, as i doubt very many ppl who come on here have used all three weapons. I have heard some good stuff about the MG3 from the germans ive met. I imagine the high rate of fire makes it a great pintle mounted weapon.

Out of the listed 3, the 240B is the only one I've used. Compared to other GPMGs I've used over the years, the 240 is one of the best all around. The main draw back to it is its overall weight and the barrel heavy design.
