I've read rumours in variuos threads that the French military is replacing the FAMAS rifle with what I believe to be called the POPOV.
Does anyone have any info about and/or pics of this weapon please because I've had no luck on Google.
Thanks in advance

"At the present time the slightly upgraded FAMAS G2 rifle is used as a platform for the future FELIN system (a French counterpart to the US "Land Warrior" programme), which incorporates a various electronic sights and sensors, connected to the soldier carried equipment, like the helmet mounted displays, ballistic and tactical computers etc."

It's actually called PAPOP, which stands for PolyArme-POlyProjectiles (Multiweapon-Multiprojectile).

Damn and we ditched the OICW in favor of the XM-8 because it was too heavy.
I'm sure they'll drop it too, remember, they are the 'weak' french rofl

The rifle seems even bigger than the prototype XM29s. Do they use airburst HE rounds that are bigger than the 20mm ones?

We did not ditch the oicw for the xm8... The xm8 is the rifle on the oicw.

The French army was never really interested in it; it was the industrials that made a lot of noise about it trying to force it down the army's throat.
Every soldier who held it said it was madness trying to operate with such a lump.

how is this thing good for close combat in built up areas? This thing is way too big and clumsy. How will this thing even fit into an apc they must take up alot of room. The G36 is long but at least its got a folding stock.
But like Remov said, don't bash it tillya try it.

Thanks all. That PAPOP ( ) looks pretty hefty, so maybe it won't be a universal replacement for the FAMAS, if its adopted at all.

With all the modern militaries now designing rifles to shoot around corners. Do you guys think we're all going to have to switch so that grenade rounds are standard, and that the machine gun rounds are big enough to tear large chunks of the wall off to get the guy standing behind the corner?
Probably with the new Future Warrior and it's increased synthetic muscle, people might be able to carry larger calibered weapons more comfortably?

Only the xm8 is German. The xm29 is made by alliant technology which I think is a New Jersey based missle and fire control designer. Remember the so called "plastic" is a developement of dupont and the oicw, xm8 and xm29 are all licensed to use the carbon fiber and other materials.
