View Full Version : Fuel Strikes
So the fuel protests start tomo, theres threats to block refinerys and panic buying has put a strain on supplies. I decided to top up at about 10pm last night, got to the petrol station at my local super market there was one cop on a push bike and 5 or 6 staff from the supermarket directing cars queing for petrol round their car park, was about a 15 minute wait but soon after I topped up they closed so got in just in time.

It's funny because yesterday morning I went to the petrol station and it was empty, so I only filled up with a fiver because I didn't think I'd need much and I'm a cheap bastard. By the evening I saw petrol stations with massive queues and found out about the proposed strikes and thus regretted my decision to put such a ****ty amount in.

Well, the government has a whole host of new powers/tricks to use implemented since the 2000 strikes.
Here's one of them;

Hey Yanks, get this. Today, in my godforsaken ****hole of a town ALL of the petrol stations had run out of unleaded. Needing petrol for work I had to buy Super unleaded for 107p a litre.
Work it out kiddies.
Discussing petrol prices is still boring though.
Macs.

I rarely pull out the "S word", but here it's necessary.
Protesting at privately owned refineries because the price of petrol is too high?
People are Stupid
You can't blame the refiners....for the capital they invest and the risk they take they deserve a return on that investment.
Who you can blame is the government for the huge tax take on petrol...but if it's cut other taxes will have to rise to compensate for the loss.
I'd also blame everyone stupid enough to allow themselves to become slaves to it.
But protesting at a refinery is about as useful as pissing into the wind.

The fuel protests take place up and down the country, motorway blockades etc..they are aimed at the government

I think you may have converted it incorrectly.
1.07 a liter = 4.86315 a gallon
4.863 pounds = 8.8699 dollars (http://finance.yahoo.com/currency/convert?amt=4.86315&from=GBP&to=USD&submit=Convert)
I think that's right???

 i always take Super unleaded. Maybe unneccessary for my car,
but i always imagine it runs better. Probably wrong.
 (1.45€/l = almost 7$/gallon)
but, ok you're right gas-threads are getting boring. It's just god damn expensive EVERYWHERE compared to a while ago.

Super unleaded does make quite a difference to performance in newer cars. But it can destroy older cars.
Coincidentally this weekend I had to travel down south for a friends house-warming party. A 300 mile round trip.
Nice timing eh?

yeah nice timing. Three weeks ago i was at a wedding, 800 km roundtrip (close to the place where macs lives  ), and guess who was sitting in the backseat of his parents and stayed 2 days longer just to avoid driving in his own car
my car is definetly not new... but super didn't do any harm so far. Guess i'm just lucky  I got it with 20.000km and drove it 90.000km myself. It didn't have any problems so far, instead of the regular things that have to be renewed. You have to pass an exhaust gas test with the general inspection every 2 years and they were perfect and didn't indicate a malfunction of the engine.
oh and you missed that in my last post (edited later):

Gallon (US liquide) = Liter (L) 3,7850

Luckily my car eats super, so I gave it that (but at 99.9p/L, ouch... I'm in canterbury at the moment for university, it's even more expensive in surrey, regular unleaded is about 1.02/L there).
We've got four petrol stations around town in Canterbury, last night AFAIK two of them had shut down because they'd run out of regular and diesel both.
I'm having to drive to Scotland today (or possibly tomorrow)... nice timing... so I got a couple of 25L jerry cans from Halfords and filled them up as well, sitting in the garage at the moment.
