Izmir is really a very lovely place. Right on the ocean, lotsa tourists and things to do. Cost of living is very cheap, so considering it's a PCS move, your dollar should go a long way for you.

Make sure you don't swim near the city though, go farther away and you can swim.
BTW Izmir is near the house where the virgin mary was born, i don't know if you're christian but that area may interest you also.

Sweet, thanks for all the info.
All I've heard from people that have been stationed in Turkey say that it is a kickass place.
I heard the comm stuff sucks at the bases tho (thats what I do), that its all NT crap.... thats going to suck coming from a place where all we work on is win 2003 and stuff. Oh well, time to adjust if I get the assignment.

The Holy Virgin Mary,
On Bulbuldagi (Mt. Nightingale) one can find the small house built for the Virgin Mary (9 kms from Seljuk) when St. John brought her to Ephesus after Christ's death. She spent her last days in that house. Today it is a place of Pilgrimage for Christians and also visited by Muslims, and is officially sanctioned by the Vatican. Every year on August the 15th, a commemoration ceremony is held there.
