US says ready for new strikes against Iraq towns

BAGHDAD (*******) - U.S. forces are ready to launch air strikes on towns in western Iraq as they search for Iraq's al Qaeda leader, who has declared war on the nation's Shi'ite Muslims in response to the Iraqi-U.S. offensive in Tal Afar.

U.S. army spokesman Major General Rick Lynch told a news briefing on Thursday that al Qaeda's Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was behind a series of suicide bombs and car bombs in Baghdad on Wednesday and Thursday which killed and wounded hundreds.

"We've got great intelligence which tells us where he (Zarqawi) is moving to and where he's trying to establish safe havens. People focus on the Euphrates river valley because that's where we believe he's coming through," Lynch said.

"Towns close to the Euphrates river valley, including Qaim and Haditha, are towns that we focus on. And as soon as we see him trying to establish a safe haven there, we will conduct operations just like we did in Tal Afar," he added.

His remarks followed a recent statement by Iraqi Defense Minister Saadoun Dulaimi that government forces were ready to hit insurgents in four other northwestern towns after the strike against the rebel stronghold of Tal Afar in northern Iraq.

Dulaimi singled out the towns of Ramadi, Samarra, Rawa and Qaim as targets for future attacks against insurgents, but gave no indication of when the attacks might take place.

Zarqawi declared war on Shi'ite Muslims in Iraq on Wednesday in response to the Iraqi-U.S. offensive in Tal Afar.

Baghdad and Washington have long said arms and insurgents are moving into Iraq from Syria, especially along the Euphrates, and spreading out from there to cities across Iraq.

Syria denies it but Iraq closed parts of the border on Sunday.

U.S. aircraft struck insurgent targets in the town of Karabila, beside Qaim and near the Syrian border, more than 10 times on Tuesday, a hospital source told *******.

Iraq's Shi'ite- and Kurdish-led government, and the occupying U.S. troops which support it, are facing an insurgency from the country's Sunni Arab minority.

Lynch said the insurgency was likely to become more violent in the run-up to an October 15 referendun on a draft constitution for Iraq, which Sunnis fear will institutionalize the loss of influence they have experienced since the U.S. invasion of 2003 to oust President Saddam Hussein, himself a Sunni.

He added that the United States saw the insurgency as coming from three main sources: what he described as "terrorists and foreign fighters"; "Iraqi rejectionists," or people who do not accept the U.S. invasion; and "Saddamists."

"We believe we are experiencing great success against the most crucial element of the insurgency, which is the terrorists and the foreign fighters," Lynch said.

"The face of that is Zarqawi and al Qaeda in Iraq. We're using all assets under our control in conjunction with the Iraqi security forces to find him and kill him."

Yes, this reflects poorly upon coalition forces. Bin Laden may be quasi understandable within the framework of preserving Pakistan's government - but its ridiculous nonetheless.

The difference between myth and reality is a fine line, using Hitler for comparison is quite wrong,Hitler was an open figure, frequently showing his face, and was an icon for the German masses, there's no doubt he existed, the film archives makes us all aware of this guy.

As for Zarqawi, well, for someone so high up on the wanted list, the archives are pretty few and far between,he's supposed to be the most wanted man in Iraq, but the video footage just isn't enough,I've only ever seen one clip of him wearing traditional Afghan clothing, and it lasted less than 3 seconds........If he was such a fearsome man,why has he never produced a video message of a recent incident, appearing before his masses, preaching Jihad,I mean it's not like nobody knows what he looks like  ..............or do they?

If he was involved in the beheadings personally, why cover your face with a mask to prevent identification?....after all hiding behind a ski mask doesn't make you invisible.............or does it?

It's always CIA/Expert analysis that points to Zarqawi's voice being identified when the masked people make these statements about Jihad in Iraq............and what's with the sound quality, always muffled and distorted............give me a freakin break here, but when I call my wife on my cellphone from Iraq,it sounds like she's in the next room, never mind 3000 miles away, under a tinfoil hat, with the microwave on and the door open!!!

Even the video qualities at times are piss poor, and I can also assure you that there is an abundance of quality Sony Video recorders over here, more than capable of making clear video messages! ;) ....why has he never appeared directly in a video, with a copy of a local newspaper,to show the date, and taunt the American Infadels of their inability to catch him?Why is it always 2-3 weeks after a major incident, that these tapes perpetrating to be Zarqawi surface, why has there never been a video released of him meeting with his so called Group, and giving them their orders to go out and kill Americans..........if he's so well known,by Western Standards, then he's nothing to hide by showing his face?

I'd be more terrified if I seen his face behind a message, especially when it's decalaring future inentions, rather than a voice so distorted,it's difficult to understand anyway.

And Iran as well

?
No, they are not...
Syria is run by a SECULAR DICTATOR, just like Egipt. In case you have not figured it out by now, you DO NOT WANT TO REMOVE SECULAR DICTATORS from an Arab Country.
In case of Iran, they have a real oposition over there. I do not think it is quite comparable to the Polish Solidarity in the 80's, but eventually, it will get there. So, instead of threads agains Iran, engage it in a political process and support the oposition over there....
Your real problems are Saudi Arabia and Pakistan...
