This is what happened..

In 1999..

Marine Corps helicopter crash that killed seven men off the San Diego coast was caused primarily by air crew mistakes during the approach to a Navy ship, military officials said.

"The helicopter simply came in too low and too fast," Marine Lt. Col. Carol McBride said Thursday in announcing results of an investigation into the Dec. 9 accident.

Damn. :(

I guess now we know why Navy and Marine chopper pilots need to be super cautious. :|

I've heard about this. The passengers were Force Recon and many drowned because they couldn't get their body armor and gear off. There were survivors though.

RIP Marines.

If you watch the pilot would have made it but he got his landing gear stuck in the railing, thats why he tilted over.

Yeah, I wonder what sort of trouble could he get into?

I really don't know much about military justice, but could he get court marshalled (sp?) or sent to military prison?

NcDeuce, I would have to say that every pilot knows that the safety of his crew and passengers are his responsibility. That's the way it works. Either in civilian or military circles.

From what we can see that others have posted, it was an error on the part of the aircrew, and it was coming in "too low and too fast."

I'm sure there was an investigation of some sort.

My point is that because this is life and death and not a video game, there needs to be accountability.

If the pilot messed up, then he should take responsbility. I'm sure he feels damned guilty about what happened, if he survived.

But stuff like this happens, and that's why there are standards, protocols and checklists to be adhered to to minimize that.

Sure, crucifying people isn't going to help the situation, but neither is being complacement and shrugging it off.

Anyway, I hope I could convey that pilots are and should be accountable for their mistakes.

I agree. If someone f*cked up, they should be held responsible. It seemed as if there was a lynch mob coming out for helicopter crews way ^ there.
