Apparently experienced Spitfire pilots during WW-2, used to start retracting the landing a fraction of a seccond before affirmative liftoff.
Giving the aircraft a little extra kickoff in speed from the body of the aircraft pumping towards the ground.
Then on liftoff those pilots would continue to fly low over the ground for a little while before pull up, in order to capitalize on the same groundbound and drag reducing areodynamical effect employed by some species of low flying birds, in order to build upp extra speed that could then be converted into a faster climb ut to operational altitude.
Still I must say it looked somewhat hairy in this clip to say the least.
In a way it reminds me about some american movie from the 70's, about a bomber-squadron stationed in Italy where crews were kept on operations continuosly by their CO until they either dropped or went mad.
In one scene one of those pilots that went mad borrowed a seaplane, whith which he flew so low he killed a squadron mate (near a beach or something like that, looked like the propeller chopped the head of the poor sob).
In another scene in the same film, another of those that broke and went mad threw a whore out of a top floor window in a brothel...
(Can't remember the title of the film though - Yet a great movie it was.)

Hey thats the guy from the Speed Channel. He does a really cool show on vintage racecars, cant recall the name though. But I do know that that was just totally wicked. I have never seen anything like that, especially something for tv. Very, very nice find Old Recon.

As for the shown clip there's maybe a sad story behind it in that it may have been one of the last appearances of the pilot of the Spitfire, Mark Hannah, before he crashed while displaying a Buchon during an airshow in Spain.
More information on that can be found:
Here (http://www.ofmc.co.uk/mah/mah.htm), here (http://www.ofmc.co.uk/mah/obituary.htm) or here (http://www.ofmc.co.uk/mah/mahinfo.htm).
