There was an amazing article published in the April 2004 issue of NG's Adventure magazine. Robert Young Pelton wrote it, he's pretty well-known. Very interesting guy IMO. The link below is related to the article, and has some good photos.

If they're Taliban or Osama-blowers, I hope they've currently got a hole in their head.

Probably Northern Alliance, al-Qaeda doesn't have that high-quality pics. Their vids always suck, you can barely tell what's going on.

Not necessarily an accurate statement. Just because the pics are good quality, doesn't mean they aren't AQ/Tali.

The rifle in the foreground has a very interesting receiver. It is obviously an older 1979-1981 run rifle due to the two-digit prefix for the serial number, type B magazine dimple, the type A magazine catch, the older type top cover, etc (nice sling, I wonder if it is OTK even). However, note the reinforced barrel trunnion usually associated with RPK receivers, yet it has the receiver parts typical of an AKS-74 (Bulgarian?). Does anyone have any insight as to what type of receiver the rifle has?

Both rifles are in 7.62x39

First one is the RPK reciever with a skeleton AKS-74 stock. Custom job which is common in Afghanistan. The resiever looks to be Vyatskie Polyani "MOLOT markings"
AKM bakelite magazine.

The rifle in a back is a Soviet AKM with an AKM bakelite mag.
