I have one of these coming in soon. Kershaw Whiplash. Got it for less then half the RRP because, well they are so unpopular Kershaw have stopped making them and retailers are just getting rid of them.

^ I like Kershaws again, Gaijin got me re-hooked. I think it was trust issues with Chinese made fixed blades that lead to few sales. Their other fixed blades that were made in the US or Italy dont sell well either, so i think ppl really just like Kershaw for their great folders.
Nice SOG Gaijin.
You did CJ, now you gots to spill the beans on where you got the materials to make it. ;)

It's sort of interesting because it seems like a nice and clean design. They seem to be investing into marketing too... they did a nice video, and now I am giving them more exposure... but hey, I'm not advertising them, this is just the way things go. It's the design side that's interesting to me.
There seems to be nothing too special about the materials. Blade is D2.

I love folding instruments. And that one looks awesome. I really want to buy a "tactical" folding knife (like the edged weapon shown in the above video), but I cannot justify spending over $200+ for one.
Currently, I'm rocking my CRKT M21-04G and loving it. The 4" belly blade serves its purpose well.

Well you might find the following link interesting - and this is for everyone else too:
http://www.knifeworks.com/benchmadediscontinueditems.aspx
These are some of the best Benchmade deals I have seen. $60 for an AXIS lock knife, $69 for a Snody with an AXIS lock.
Then there are the "imported" liner locks starting from $27. I think they are good value. I have never seen any Benchmade go for that price, even if it's not made in USA.
And there are many Harley-Davidsons in every colour. It seems like they made too many of them, in too many colours, and they are not moving. These ones might come down in time.
I don't know for how long these deals will be there - if you are reading this one year from now and you check the link, I have no idea what you will find.

NEW BOOK on VAN ADESTINE KNIVES released.
Hello All, If this is not the correct place to share this info, please direct it accordingly.
I wanted to announce the completion of my NEW BOOK on VAN ADESTINE knives released this past Labor Day Weekend. (again I'm sorry that the first book SOLD OUT so quickly with so many left wanting)
Robert Van Adestine made many hand forged knives for WWII soldiers.
This New Book is much more detailed than my first book from 2008 and includes over 50 knives and other items in the collection, with details and history about each.
This is a "Hard Cover" Limited Edition showing over 2-1/2 times as many knives as my first book. see this link for more info. I'd be happy to answer any questions.

The book was originally delayed about 10 days for 2 recently acquired knives were hastily added to the study.
One is a Hunter and the other is a WWII Double Edge Fighter.
These represent Knife no.50 and no.51 added to the study.
Information about these (and 49 others) are included in the book.

Here are 10 WWII Van Adestine Fighting knives that have been collected. The WWII Van Adestine Fighter is likely the rarest of all the WWII U.S. Military Fighting knives. The 6th knife from the left is the latest addition, but unfortunately it is not included in the book. It arrived a 2 weeks after the book was released for publication. A separate "update page" can be obtained from the Author.

love it, found a way to carry it at work, its my first go to blade right now :)(out of 3) if you remember the spike, I never found a good way to carry it at work :( but this little baby is tied of on a short length of string from a belt loop, and rests in my left pocket, all I have to do is grab the string, pull down to slip it out he pocket and let it slip into my hand by pulling on the cord, pretty quick way to get the anti-vato(;)) in place for work

Yep, they are my favorite fixed blade design; not surprising considering I have 4 in 3 sizes and 2 blade steels! Only weak point is that the 7's don't fit in a Spec-Ops brand sheath and the one they come with isn't the greatest. I'll be rectifying that with a custom kydex sheath though.

Great little knife.
Good size, design, ergonomics, and still holds an edge after treating it poorly.

I just got the big version of the gerber covert, I love it, opens and closes a lot smoother than my SOGs.
170021
170022
170023
also got a SOG powerassist multitool, really love this thing.
170024
the little ruler hashmarks are incredibly useful, I use to put them on all my old knives just for a quick reference to what size wrench I need when I'm working on tractors away from the shop.
170025
The jaws are gear driven, kinda like compound force with bolt cutters
170026
It's got a lot of different tools, and both the knife and saw blades are assisted opening and lock in place.
170027
One of my favorite things is that there are individual locks for all the small tools. I've had a Leatherman MUT since it came out, but I lost it on the tractor one day, somewhere over 100 acres. I liked it better than the sog, particularly the replaceable wire cutter jaws and the bit driver system, but it was heavy as lead and apparently the pocket clip is not to be trusted.
Also picked up another SOG Flash II to replace my old SOG work knife. I wasn't really impressed with the first one I got, only took a couple months abuse on the farm before it got so dull I couldn't really sharpen it anymore, but it was a few bucks cheaper than the Gerber, and the Gerber is so nice I just can't bring myself to take it to work.
170028
new one with half-serrated blade with tiger stripe finish
170029
old one, with a hole burnt through the middle of the blade edge. I guess that's what I get for scraping battery terminals while they're still connected :cantbeli: Sog has a really good warranty and they said they would have sharpened it back to factory finish just for the cost of shipping, if I hadn't burnt that hole through it.
And my last new toy, a JB Outman credit card size knife/multitool.
170030
170031
Has a knife edge, saw blade, ruler marks, can operner, bottle cap opener, and a few small wrench sizes. At least it appears to be more useful than my Swiss-Tech utilikey, the only good thing on it is the bottle cap opener.

Also what's a better steel for knifes, 01 tool steel or a high carbon steel? Thinking of making a knife soon, but don't have any suitable metal.
Henry's Fork has a good list of material suppliers, specificly for knife making, though I think you want to start with 01 and after carbonize it, high carbon steel may be too britle to work with

I own a Cold Steel GI Tanto. I picked it up for about $25, which is the average online price. I was attracted to its looks, it's like the poor man's Strider BT, but after doing a little research into it's quality, I was really surprised.
Knifetests (http://www.knifetests.com/) did a destruction test on it, and it proved plenty tough. I've managed to put a nice edge on mine, and that was just with a simple pocket sharpener. I'm sure with a real sharpening system, you could get this blade crazy sharp. Cheap in price, but not quality. Can't speak to other CS knives though.

01-17-2012, 04:33 PM
why so inexpensive?
Chairborne Ranger
01-17-2012, 04:37 PM
Yes, full tang. It's just a single piece of metal, with 2 G-10 scales bolted to the tang for a bare bones handle. I ditched the scales on mine and cord wrapped it, just feels and looks better. If you're planning on getting one, look for the newer ones that come with the plastic Secure-Ex sheath. Much nicer than the older style nylon sheath.
Edit:
Soldat, it's made in China, which was almost a deal breaker for me, but after seeing the test vids, I figured $25 wasn't a bad price for a good beater knife.

well, thats what some people call them!
they are in fact aircrew escape knives for getting out of the straps etc in downed aircraft.
the push buttons on the handle release the lock pin which you can see at the top end of the scabbard.
there is a "retaining para chord" string which attached to the bent part of the handle to stop it being lost if he comes out the scabbard.
you used to see aircrew walking around dragging it behind them because the did know it had worked loose! thinking they looked cool in the flying suits an all......lol!
they got issued to CRW wing after one of the guys got hung up on the rope in the iranian embassy seige assault.

I would raise my hand but its been a while since someone pulled a blade on me, or i did on someone
there is no formula for proper hold, as long as its firm, over/under hand, all depends on situation (though I like Miyamoto Musashi's explanation on how to hole a sward in a fight)
a best blade would be the one you have the quickest access to (been slashed by a plastic cutlery and it aint pleasont at all:/) but I would always pick one that is sharp and fits well in my hand
but all in all, I aint no expert, just a fun of white weapons ;)

is the person aware of the knife? (panic/defensive/agresive/oblivious)
what's their background in marshal arts? street smarts?(how they face me; front/side,where is their eyesight on)
what clothing they wearing? (winter, bulky/summer thin layer)
where is the nearest exit?(are they looking to turn and run/will they charge)
too many variables, but yes, some blades sit well only one way in hand, its kind of limiting, after all dont want it to slip and cut my hand while tring to defend myself

Anyone know of a good knife I could use for saltwater applications (swimming, diving, fishing, etc)? I'd like to bring my Cold Steel Peacekeeper II down to the Caribbean with me, but I don't know if it would corrode and I'd hate to wreck it...
SOG SEAL Pup maybe. Knifetest did some underwater testing (http://www.knifetests.com/SOGSEAL2000underwaterDestructionTest.html)of a SOG SEAL 2000 (discontinued) and the Pup is made from the same AUS6 steel.
Divers Direct (http://www.diversdirect.com/scuba/scuba-accessories/dive-knife/)has a good selection of dive knives. Couldn't tell you which is best, I have no experience with such knives.

Thanks fellas. Its headed off to the Great White North.
HF.......I need a dagger(ish) fighting knife........What do you have? Got any cool ideas?
Soldats design and the model you already have, are my fighters.
Ideas:
Been thinking about making a chute knife (https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=chute+knife&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&biw=1024&bih=614&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi) for a while...
A smaller and slimmer version of your knife, with a more fighter styled blade....
SOG seal and seal pup type of bowie.....
And as always....a Sgt. Barnes push knife....p-)

Look up the "Salt" knives by Spyderco. I believe the steel of the blades is designed to work in wet/corrosive whatnot.

Yeah, but then you just beat him to death with it. Many of runs after that.

Ooh that's the one one of the main characters gets stabbed with by the rogue general, plucks it out of his chest and returns it to sender via airmail...(and manages to hit the guy in the eye, you know, CINEMATIC)
Ah, so the enemy uses the Tanto while the main characters uses the BH Tatang...

Seems that way. I have the game for the xbox, haven't played it in a few years, but i can't remember the player characters ever using the tanto outside of that one moment. So technically, your knife is indeed in COD Modern Warfare 2. How is the knife anyway? Been looking for some relatively inexpensive stuff for outdoors.

you were right (http://callofduty.wikia.com/wiki/Endgame)....
I like the Tanto as a tactical knife but I wouldn't recommend it as survival or camp knife. The tang is too thick, the blade too long, the finger guard too large for pressure or smaller tasks requiring control, and the point too impractical to skin with. Grind seems okay though ;-)
If you like a cheap, but quality survival knife have a look at the Frost Mora or Clipper - world renowned.

Not with their fixed.
Their folder kits are good, so i would feel more than comfortable getting one of the fixed kits.

S30V is the best blade steel available. It is a high vanadium stainless steel with very high edge retention.
12C27Mod Sandvik provides supreme corrosion resistance with great ductility and strength for wear resistance and durability.
13C26 Sandvik provides great edge retention and hardness for wear resistance and strength.
420HC is a stainless steel that provides excellent rust resistance, has good edge retention and is easy to sharpen. In a word, ideal.
Is this true what are you all'ss thoughts?
