I just saw your post. Pretty cool. Did it used to have a cord-wrapped handle? The menuki looks out-of-place.

I had a first production Mini SERE 2000 that had blade play. I sent it in to Al Mar and they replaced the blade. The knife that they sent me back was rock-solid.
I sold it though as I prefer Axis Locks :)
That's interesting to hear. Apparently Al Mar have some QC issues. I have seen the same problem (blade play) on a video on YouTube, but it was the original, bigger SERE 2000 knife. I don't care about some blade play on my knife because I'm not into Ninja stuff, but anyone going to Iraq or Afghanistan should make sure that they have a faultless SERE knife before they leave.
I realize that the liner lock is not as strong as an AXIS lock, but there is one advantage that this kind of lock has. It is similar to that found on the Spyderco Military. The idea is that the handle is open from the top as well as the bottom. If the insides of the knife get dirty, it is much easier to clean than most ordinary folders. If you've got access to compressed air, that should do a world of good to the knife. In the field there is no compressed air but it should be possible to improvise other ways of cleaning the interiors: in an emergency you could run fresh water through it, and then apply some gun oil or whatever.

Mr. Dundee didnt tell me what he was going to use it for, im guessing drop bear filleting. p-)
@bang bang, very nice.
@Walker, i love my Ritter grip, its become my current EDC. And you cant go wrong with anything that DMT makes. Its a shame to hear about your Al Mar not being up to snuff.

Cool. Is that the bigger version or the Mini Grip Ritter? Which one would you recommend? Did you also buy it from the Aeromedix online store?

Large version. If i were to get a mini, i would pull off the clip and let it ride at the bottom of my front pocket. A nice size if you didnt leave the city or were worried about scaring the sheeple.
Yup, got it from Aeromedix. The cons are minor, if at all. The clip that came with it wasnt like Benchmades old clips, the new ones are parkerized and scratch easy. So i put my old clip on it.
Compared to todays prices for the regular Grips, the Large Ritter is worth the $. The D2 Cabelas grip is tempting, but almost the same price, iirc.

I agree about the new pocket clips. I have swapped some of mine for other clips and stripped the coating off others.

The Ritter Grips are my favourite folders. I have M2 High Speed and S30V knives in both sizes:
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5554/dscf0220u.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/i/dscf0220u.jpg/)
..I also have the Cabela's D2 Grips, but slightly favour the Ritters' blade profile.

I'm a firefighter..so no shortage of compressed air! :) However, you are right. A quick wash and lube will get most of the crap out of an Axis Lock, and it is quite easy to strip with a couple of Torx drivers.

Sweet bunch o' Ritters. How you like the M2? Any real noticeable differences compared to the s30v?
Nice Gerber Omon. One without serrations would be quite popular, i know i would get one. But the serrations that is already on the blade are decent and tough, didnt chip any teeth while battoning firewoord, something i wouldnt try with some of my cold steel or SOG serrated knives.

Tell me, which size do you find more useful? You have both the big Doug Ritters and the mini versions. Do you use the big ones or minis more???
Steve Andrews

I prefer a Mini for day to day use and I use them a lot more than the full sized knives. The Minis are very compact but will still deal with most of the jobs that the full sized knife does. I do keep a full sized knife in my firejacket for use at incidents, as they are easier to handle in thick firefighting gloves.

I love M2HS and have quite a few Benchmades in that steel. I prefer it to S30V and find that it takes a great edge and holds it for ever, whilst still being easy to sharpen.

Opinel isn't "sexy" enough; it's just too plain. It's needs to be high speed uber tactical and overpriced! Anyway, I just got my first Opinel (Model No. 8) this week, but not as an EDC.
When I was in the Army, I had an actual pressing need almost every day at work for my Gerber -- either the knife, pliers, screwdriver, etc. Away from the Army, I have almost never needed a blade of any kind in a place where I wasn't able to access one, ie at home or in my car. I really have no actual need to carry a blade with me "at all times".
That being said, this has been my only real "EDC" for the past few months, and I haven't had to use it once:
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/4491/071208utilikeyt.jpg (http://img441.imageshack.us/i/071208utilikeyt.jpg/)
It fits right on the keyring with the other keys so it's out of the way until I need it...which so far, I haven't. Anyway, I'm thinking of replacing it with my Swiss Army SD (the cheapest, most basic model Swiss Army Knife) cause it's "cooler", but I'm not sure yet..

Probably, what kind of work do you do?
I would fvk a Op up in the first 5 min at my job. Thats why it stays in the tackle box for fishing.
Dave, Op's are very sexy, sitting next to my fly vest and rod by the stream side. Cutting Manzanita and Oak all day long needs a little tuffer knife and steel.

Despatch, receipt and issue. I use it cutting packing straps and boxes, I learned my lesson about box cutters when one snapped on me and I learned about using more expensive knives for work when one got stolen from a desk drawer that cost me £80.
Acording to someone that lives near me and I bump into at bike rallies Opinel are the best knives ever for cutting hash and grass but as I don't partake I will just have to take his word for it.

Classic Gerbers..Strider Rogue Warrior..Al Mar Warrior..Spyderco Poliwog
Flash, your Al Mar Warrior is a very unique piece of cutlery. It might be worth a lot of money too. Spyderco is in the process of introducing a new version of this design. It is quite a threatening looking thing, and it is not much good for ordinary use, "sentry removal" being the main purpose. The unusual design requires training and is not suited for the average joe. Some sort of Israeli naval commando group are the first end users of this product. A google search will reveal photos and more info on the Spyderco "Hobbit" Warrior.

Thanks. It is a very well balanced, well thought out design. I believe Al Mar was a Vietnam era Green Beret, thus the "sentry removal" design. Most notably, the curved, thin serrations along the spine are not very effective for wood or rope cutting. I've always admired Al Mar's "old school" influences. All in one knife ?
Even the mountain men of old carried a hatchet and a bowie.
If its survival hunting you are thinking of, the best bet would be a fishing kit, assuming of course you have lakes or bodies of water there.
Not sure what the beasties are in montana ( puma ? bear ? wolf ?) or what the local laws are, but if the local info says its going to be a high risk of running into one, I'd either go elsewhere or seriously think of packing a firearm if the law permitted. And I'd invest in decent maps, a gps and good comms.

Spyderco Temperance? There's a Spyderco Temperance 2 model that's been on the market for a while, but it's a limited production model. I have two Spyderco Temperances myself (original model).
A bit similar, but bigger, are the different Spyderco Jerry Hossoms. They have been on sale and can be found at real cheap prices on the net:

Yes, I have seen this before somewhere on the net. It's a close copy of the Benchmade Stryker. The Stryker itself is a neat knife, though discontinued and replaced by the Nitrous Stryker. I have a Mini Stryker.
What is really wrong here is that they have used the Benchmade logo and put it right where it's supposed to be on real Benchmades. I'm not blaming you, not at all, it's kind of interesting to see this kind of thing. But what hurts more is when they make copies of rescue knives like the Victorinox Rescue tool; then people might use inferior tools in life-or-death situations.
It's a really blatant copy. But as I said before, I'm not blaming you.
Edit: -just had a look at my Mini Stryker... the Benchmade logo is a very close copy of the real Benchmade logo. It's absolutely going to fool someone who isn't familiar with Benchmade knives. The one thing that stands out is the serrations. Benchmade serrations are totally different, and that is the biggest giveaway.

Yeah, it's wrong, but I have no ethics. For a mere 7 euros I could not resist. I'm eager to find out how long it will take before it falls apart. Like you said, it's not advisable to use such cheap copies as proper knives. They're curiosities, really.
Also got this for the same price. I'm sure it's "inspired" by a real brand too, though I don't know which one.

Since we're talking knives, does anyone know if its worth to drop $100 for this one:
SigTac® SIG SAUER® Folder
A quick google and what do we find:
"The SIG SAUER® Folder takes the lines of the famous SIG SAUER® P226 and blends them into a tough, tanto-style blade design, creating a feeling right at home in the hand and delivering performance paralleling the P226 duty pistol. Blade is made of AUS 8 steel, reversible pocket clip, dual easy opening thumb stud, Zytel grip, liner lock and lanyard hole. Overall length of 8.5” with blade length of 3.34”. Made in Seki, Japan."
The price does not compare favourably with Spydercos. The Sig Sauer folder is made in Seki-City, and many Spyderco models are made in Seki-City. But you can get a Spydie with VG-10 steel for less. AUS-8 steel is OK, but VG-10 is superb.
Then again, Seki-City is maybe the city on this planet where they have the best knife-makers. So, an AUS-8 blade from Seki-City is always going to cost more than an AUS-8 blade from China.
I think it's a specialty product for owners of Sig Sauer pistols. You can get a CRKT AUS-8 folder for a lot less, or get a Spydie for less and have superior steel.
HOWEVER you might find this knife for a much lower price on some other internet store, or EBay. Then it's going to be better value for money.

Okay, didn't know about the steel. The main reason I want that knife is because it looks good. I love the handle. Anyway, I guess I'll check ebay etc, can't believe I didn't think about that in the first place.
Walker-69
10-01-2009, 02:27 PM
Well you know, AUS-8 is not bad. It's better than 420HC, better than 440A. But it's not a premium steel either.

Very very sharp, very practical, and easy to access on a loop of 550 worn as a necklace. I am aware of neck knife 'leashes' or cords, whatever, that would snap, preventing the wearer from being choked with it if they were assaulted. I'm not sure how to do that with a knife with a sheath with excellent retention such as this one. :-) Don't get choked, I guess!
Sorry 'bout the blurry pics. Indoors. Better pics some other time.

Solid. Japanese-style wrap (Tsuka-ito). Crosses over itself. Basically, every-other wrap is a bend/knot on the sides of the knife.

When I'm in the wild I normally use two knives.
The gerber "infantry survival" for more rough activities like chopping wood, building encamptments and so on.
The lighter one is the swedish Mora "2000" it's the standard knife of various forces in Sweden.

Just to clear up some confusion:
The Gerber LMF II series comes in three styles: ASEK, Survival, and Infantry.
The ASEK comes in foliage green only and is infra-red resistant. The sheath features two leg straps.
The Survival model is available in camel brown only and is not infra-red resistant. The sheath also features two leg straps.
Finally, the Infantry model is available in a foliage green, camel brown, and black. The sheath has only one leg strap.
Many stores do not even know the difference and constantly mislabel them. When I got my crap issued out with no knife in flight school I started doing my research. I'm still on the wall between the Gerber ASEK and Ontario ASEK... I used the Ontario knife in SERE and thought it was great... even after class after class of abuse!

I paid €340.
Aibeethoven was in Rotterdam to buy a SOK and when he was there he phoned me if he should pick up the KCT for me.
The main difference between the KCT and the SOK is that the SOK has a more pointed tip in order to puncture things more easaly (the SOK is an adaptation of the KCT for Dutch SF).
It feels, and handles, good.

I bought one of these a few weeks ago -
http://img36.imageshack.us/img36/233/3923.jpg (http://img36.imageshack.us/i/3923.jpg/)
For my purposes it's ideal, feels relatively well made despite the low cost (£5.95 or less than 10USD), it sits on my keys without me actually noticing it's there until I need it and since it'll never really be used for heavy duty work (Just opening boxes and the like) I don't really have to worry about it being too small for the job.

Victorinox might make the multi-tools with the highest mechanical quality. I am not referring to their Swiss Army knives, Victorinox also make Leatherman-style multi-tools in two sizes. Google for 'swisstool'.

(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_15_of_the_United_States_Code) § 1241 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/15/1241.html)–1245 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/15/1245.html)), prohibits possession on Federal lands, Indian reservations, military bases, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and other protectorates. It prohibits manufacture and sale of switchblades in interstate commerce.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchblades#cite_note-Walker-5) The act was amended in 1986 to also restrict ballistic knives (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_knife). Federal law controls Federal aspects only, and does not mandate prohibition within an individual state. It does say specified knives can not be mailed through the U.S.Postal Service, and provides penalty exceptions for other common carriers/shipping companies doing normal business.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switchblades#cite_note-Walker-5)
18 U.S.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_18_of_the_United_States_Code) § 1716(g)(2) (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/1716%28g%29%282%29.html) provides this summary:
Federal law prohibits shipment of automatic knives across state lines, with the following exceptions: Switchblade knives can be shipped: (1) to civilian or Armed Forces supply or procurement officers and employees of the Federal Government ordering, procuring, or purchasing such knives in connection with the activities of the Federal Government; (2) to supply or procurement officers of the National Guard, the Air National guard, or militia of a state, territory or the District of Columbia ordering, procuring, or purchasing such knives in the connection with the activities of such organization; (3) to supply or procurement officers or employees of the municipal government of the District of Columbia or the government of any State or Territory, or any county, city or other political subdivision of a State or Territory; procuring or purchasing such knives in connection with the activities of such government. (4) to manufacturers of such knives or bona fide dealers therein in connection with any shipment made pursuant of an order from any person designated in paragraphs (1), (2), and (3).
15 U.S.C. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_15_of_the_United_States_Code) § 1244 (http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/15/1244.html) provides, in summary: Knives can be shipped by common carrier, that sale, transportation or distribution, possession or introduction into interstate commerce of switchblade knives is authorized if it is pursuant to a contract with the armed forces or any member or employee thereof acting in the performance of his or her duty may possess switchblade knives and may have them shipped to him and sold to him or her. The possession and transportation upon his or her person of a switchblade knife or a blade 3 inches or less is authorized to any handicap individual who has the use of only one arm.

Anyone tried the LMF II yet?
I've had mine for about a year. It's a good hard use knife if you can find one cheap. I got mine for about $50.00 in brand new condition. The edge holds well with repeated use in the field and it's really solid with that thick spine. I've split wood with it, dressed animals, and done a number of other things with it all in one trip without any problems. If it starts to lose a good edge in the field the v-sharpener in the scabbard does a decent job of getting it back in shape until you can properly sharpen it with a stone. Overall a really good knife for the money.
Anyone tried the LMF II yet?
Very nice knife from Gerber, i love mine.

www.knifeworks.com is selling the Spyderco Centofante 4 for $33.95
http://i403.photobucket.com/albums/pp114/arvi_net/Centofante4.jpg
This is one of my all-time favourite knives. It is more of a "gentleman's knife" than a tactical knife. The blade shape is very good for certain duties, like opening boxes and plastics. It might not be very good as an all-purpose knife though. I think the potential buyer should look at it as a "number 2" knife rather than an "only knife". It could also complement a Swiss Army knife very well, for everyday use.
The Centofante 4 is an impeccable design. It just feels sooo good in the hand. The steel is VG-10. The knife is quite thin and light, and it is a very good slicer.
The Centofante 4 is being discontinued now, but there might be a lot of them left in the warehouses, so it might be possible to find good deals in other shops too.
www.knifeworks.com is also selling Spyderco Jerry Hossoms at very nice prices. They can also be found in other places at very good discount prices.

Some people have really good taste. Mind you, you can find a similar knife from a different maker, a "Centofante" model with the same blade shape, but it's not VG-10. I am sure it's a good knife, I wouldn't mind owning one, it's cheaper still... but this Spydie is excellent value for a VG-10 knife.

Interesting finishing on blade, what's up with it?
Its crinkle coat, a powder epoxy resin. The blade is made of tool steel, which rusts quick, so a coating protects it from the elements. I dont mind coatings on my knives, some people do, not a deciding factor for me. With use it comes off anyway.

Here's a question anyone who collects 'antique' knives and bayonets. I've got a 1907 SMLE bayonet that I want to clean up some. It's in pretty good shape but there are some minor signs of wear and usage on it, but no rust on the bayonet itself. It does have some grease in and around the screws in the handle, and also in the notch for the bayonet lug. There's a small bit of grease on the scabbard too.
Any thoughts on how to safely clean it up?

its simple really, pretty much like the firearms;
dont point it at things/people you dont intend to skew
before disassemly make sure its not attached to a loaded/unloaded firearm
keep fingers away from sharp edges
and you should be finep-)

Hey, I'm looking for a cheap-ish knife for use in the Finnish Army, as I'll be "joining" in January.
Use would most likely to be, well, a camping knife. Opening stuff, cutting stuff, some woodwork I guess, stuff like that. So no need for a rambo knife with 25 cm blade. Price around 25-50 euros, fixed blade. I guess straight edge would be the best for my needs?
I've been looking at Fällkniven and Marttiini, any model or (other) brand suggestions? I've been also looking at the Finnish Sissipuukko (ranger knife), but it's a little pricey at around 70 euros.

Maybe a scandi knife (puukko) is the way to go in the Finnish army. That is the traditional knife and then people won't laugh at you and call you a 'rambo' or something. Check out www.puukkosivut.net. I would recommend old-school carbon steel (hiiliteräs), since it gets far sharper than cheap stainless (ruostumaton). 20-30 euros will get you a very good carbon steel puukko.

For technical stuff, I would put my money on hammers. Axes can be kept simple and less expensive.
Le Grand Tour is a nice way to get familiar with the pros and cons of a Axe. But when it gets vertical, hammers are better, IMHO.
BTW, Ice Climbing in Oregon is done mostly in the Summer, when the glaciers open up. Serac Ice.................. is so easy and fun.
Psst at altitude, meat is a no no.

Meat tips... why's that? Body can't process it?

It can help in causing AMS,S steals Oxygen. Complex protein takes more O2 to break down and digest. Only nuts to worry about is cashew.
A little fish helps too. depends on length of climb and altitude. Carbo and water.. for altitude.

Fish = good?
Altitudes here are all 14k and less. I'm not so hot with nutrition yet. Hehe.

A good book, is "MOUNTAINEERING, Freedom of the Hills,"
Garlic.......... is wonderful. A friend (Famous person) attributed garlic to her ascent of Mt. Everest.

Never heard of the book.
If I catch you staring at my meat one more time... ;-)
Do they make a lighter version of Garlic? I want to cut down on the weight of my gear.

Garlic does some really great cardiovascular stuff.
Pasta dinner,
Slice garlic thin, about a head per person.
Saute in olive oil (1/8 -1/4 cup per person) to a light tan.
Add in cooked pasta and mix. Add in fresh Parmesan cheese and eat.
Major go food.

Sounds damn good.
Garlic apparently helps with herpes. Kill two birds with one stone, eh?

Yup. I had the Anti-Vato Device in my pack, but didn't take it out for a picture. Brought it up specifically to take a hero shot of it with some dramatic backdrop.
