Just figured I'd make a thread along these lines to see who does what. There have been plenty of military ones, and I know there are several guys in the Emergency Services who post here, so lets hear ya!
I'll start..
I'm a NREMT-B in the state of California, working with American Medical Response.

I i volunteered from time to time at the fire department my father worked for. I thought about becomming an active fireman, but my father retired and i took his advice to not become a fireman at that particular station, as there was alot of politicking going on among the ranks, they had ****ass equipment, and the chief that was to replace my father when he retired was a tool who only got the job because the commisioner was his uncle but the dude was really a ****ty fireman who didnt have much knowledge about leading men....at least thats what my father had said.
someday id like to get involved again, ive got alot of buddies that are volunteer firemen, but with work i really dont think i will have time to attend drills and meetings and stuff and make the minimum number of runs required.

Little known fact: California Joe coined the phrase "rat's ass" once while arresting a drunk driver.

I started off working out of AMR's Garden Grove station. I was on a CCT (Critical Care Transport) unit, which is staffed by two EMT's and one RN. The majority of calls were facility to facility however, so I transfered. I currently work as part of the Cerritos/LA County Operation. We provide transport for the LA County Fire Department, due to the fact that they don't operate RA's, along with all the normal duties which go along with BLS crews.
As of right now our company is in a contract bid with Care Ambulance for the LA County contract. Who is going to gain the LA county contract is still in the air as of right now.

naw i could have probably gotten in, at least on a volunteer basis. They arent as strict about phyiscal standards as the military or law enforcement... Now if i were to become a state certified, full time paid fireman, that would be a diifferent story. You are required to attend the state fire academy and they do have strict physical standards to meet...particularly involving lifting, which isnt so much a problem for me. Its the running that gives me a hard time.
Also now, alot of fire departments want or even require you be a liscensed EMT or EMT-D, and i know for a fact that while i *might* have the time to scrounge up to attend the volunteer fire department drills, i would NEVER have the time to attend the classes and do the studying necessary to pass the EMT tests which i hear are particularly bitchy.

I actually wanted to go into EMT instead of LE, but i never took chemistry or biology in highschool so i would have had to take those college classes before applying, and i gave up.

I'm working on my CNA certification now but, I won't be able to work as a CNA until I turn 18. I should be getting into the ADN (Associate Degree of Nursing) program once I get out of High School. Once, I get out of that program, I just have to pass boards and then I'll be an RN. Then I start my Anesthetist classes....Oh Boy....4 Years of schooling for that.....

I wanted to go to police high school but there was no recruitment that year. And now requirements are crazy becuase soo many peoples want to join. Same with city guards they recruit only peoples with higer education after governemnts started to send them unemployed ex-miners. I'll try again after i end my bodyguard school and return from army.
