i am not really sure what they did for the physical challenge portion of it, but i did see the combat action portion of it. they wore miles gear, and had to defeat 3 terrorists, and secure 2 shoulder fired sams. it was sad, 3 terrorists were taking like half the squads out. it was so sad... and then i watched the best ranger competition which made the defender challenge look even more sad.

Don't be so hard on us AirForce types. I was in a FACP (forward air control post) & we used to scrim against the Marines- wearing miles gear etc. They'd attempt to agress us & we'd defend the camp. It was a real goat rope. It usually went like this:
-form up at 0500 with convoy vehicles loaded the previous night
-drive 8 hours
-get to camp, dig hasty fighting positions
-unpack all gear (radar, satellite/microwave vans etc)
-drive ground rods, integrate generators, align radios, find satellites
-by now it's dark, time to wait for the eventual "surpise" attack
-play all night, hope you don't beep
The Marines only made it past us a few times (I always had to hump the m60, being a large, stout bastard). Yeah, it's easy on the defending side, but still not too bad for a bunch of overweight techies...

"Defender Challenge" is an annual competition between USAF Security Forces units from the various "major commands" (AMC, ACC, AETC, ANG, AFR, AFSOC, etc.), the RAF Regiment, and the Canadian Air Force.
The units compete in various events (obstacle courses, pistol, rifle, machine gun, grenade launcher, a tactical scenario and some other stuff).
The RAF Regiment usually wins the rifle competition.
