hey gang

sorry if this is the wrong place for this question..

i did alot of searching for this on google, but didnt find much, just where to buy it.

anyway, i just bought a Surfire fast-attach high endurance sound surpressor. it works great!

however i want to start experimenting with subsonic ammo. i know most SS wont re-charge the weapon. thats all i really know.

so a few things: will using SS ammo end up in me cleaning my weapon EVEN MORE then i have to now with the surpressor. what are some other things i should know about it? what a good brand? where to buy it? etc. etc...

thanx much p-)

I always wonder where people get their money.

Hows about sending some my way, along with a Class III? :D

5.56

Do you have any clue on what you are actually doing?

5.56 is not a suitable for subsonic loads.

You'd atleast need a .22LR conversion to use subsonic ammunition. But thats in .22LR and .22LR is pretty quiet as is without a sound suppressor.
So is .22 Short, but you can't really do anything with .22 Short other than punching paper.

If there is such thing as a subsonic .223, I've never seen nor heard of any kind.

I know many who handload ss 5.56 :backhand:

And know of quite a few commercial 5.56 ss on the market.

Do you know what sub sonic even is? :| Or is it just something you picked up on the internet? And like using the word. Let me guess subsonic is required in suppressed weapons as well?

The Surefire supressor is designed for use with current issue US M855 Green Tip ammunition. Trying to use subsonic ammo in a supressor that scrubs off 200-400 FPS of muzzle velocity is a bad idea, and will take your weapon down to the effectiveness of a .22LR.

I have a friend in Jacksonville looking for a C3 dealer. Who facilitated your transfer, if you don't mind me asking?

...a supressor that scrubs off 200-400 FPS of muzzle velocity...

According to Surefire, it actually adds 30-50fps of muzzle velocity.

You guys are missing the most obvious "problem" with this post. I call BS on this guy actually owning a Surefire suppressor. If he really bought one, then I would hope he'd have read the literature that came with it since Surefire suppressors aren't exactly "cheap". This guy is full of it.

Surefire in general isn't cheap

thanks guys, i know very little about it. thats why i was asking.....

what you guys dont undertand is that i wanted to experiment with this stuff. obviously its doesnt work like that. and yes i know what subsonic ammo is. ive just seen people at the range i go to useing surrpressed 9mm with subsonic ammo. so i was wondering if it went the same for a 5.56, but wanted to also see if it worked well with a surpressor.

M4Guru: tell your friend to try St Nicholas Guns or Shooters.

and thanks for telling me about what would happen in the event i did use SS ammo with a surpressor. that what i wanted to know.

molsen: i do indeed own a Surfire, and find it insuting you are calling me a lier. p-)

thanks guys p-)
thanks

Well using a supressor doesn't reduce the muzzle velocity as corrected earlier. But using sub-sonic ammo on 5.56 is really counterproductive as the bullet is light and relies on it's high velocity (850-900m/s) to do the damage. Sub-sonic 5.56 has only 1/7 of the kinetic energy full power round has.

Sub-sonic 9mm's are better as they have heavier & slower round to start with.

Best use for supressor in full power assault rifle IMHO is to use full power rounds. Rifle will still make a lot of noise, but the noise comes all the way on the bullet flight path (not in the muzzle) efficiently masking the location of the firing position acoustically. Suppressor also kills muzzle blast and flash giving better concealment and easier follow up shots in low light conditions.

Just remember that your rifle will hit in different spot with supressor attached compared to shooting without.

Engel Ballistic Research offers a 5.56x45mm subsonic load; however, it will not cycle the action.

FWIW: I have also heard of certain small companies which have used custom-made extra-heavy bullets (110-130 grains) for 5.56x45mm subsonic loads.

I don't believe you because you are asking on MilPhotos.net instead of someplace (like www.ar15.com) that has people with way more knowledge on this subject. Too many people post too much BS on this site for 99% of the info passed here to be considered non-factual or complete nonsense.

There is no need to be that rude. If you think you live in a "Big Boys' World", perhaps you ought to start acting like a "Big Boy"; and this means showing some respect and decency towards fellow board members.

The guy just asked a question. Don't jump on him for it.

rofl rofl

i like the whole sand clit thing..... i will have to use that one!

this site is just as good to be asking this question as is ar15.com. i got alot of good info, probably the same i would get on ar15.com. i dont belong to that site nor do i care to anytime soon.

but then again i should of known someone like you would make a pointless if not jelous comment. i understand your insignificant life. so i dont take offence this time for your last post.

and thank you D.E. Watters for the info!
