COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Danish police, criticized because many of them are out of shape, demanded that they be able to work off their excess flab while on the clock.

The head of the national police force, Torsten Hesselbjerg, said Sunday that he was weighing introducing an annual physical exam which police would have to pass in order to continue to work in the field.

Citing a rise in accidents on the job, he told the daily Berlingske Tidende that a large number of the 10,500 police were overweight and ran out of breath easily.

The police union quickly hit back, calling on the state to give police officers the time and equipment to step up their fitness.

"It is a given that officers should be able to get in shape during their working hours and not only during their free time, and that they are provided with better sporting equipment," union head Tommy Agerskov Thomsen told AFP.

"The same management which today is criticizing the employees a few years ago stopped (them) from exercising during their working hours... arguing that the police had too much work," he said.

The spokesman for the Copenhagen police, Flemming Steen Much, said the numbers on overweight police were "exaggerated."

"Not all of us have become fat and sluggish, and are eating pastries all day. Sure, we don't run 100 meters in less than 10 seconds, but we aren't doing badly," he said.

He pointed out that many of the country's police stations had modern gym equipment, but because the police were overworked they were unable to exercise while at the office.
