I know the US Army is currently developing the Land Warrior system, but is there an active research project going on for an exo-skeleton like armor system?

Well, its super tough for what it is, our government is trying to figure out how to manufacture it so we can apply it for military and other services.

DARPA is in research to build the Exoskeletons for Human Augmentation. This system has little to do with the protein chitin and calcium used in the exoskeleton of arthropods. Instead this system when worn will "...increase the speed, strength, and endurance of soldiers in combat environments.".
