That pic of those Indian soldiers in the snow is quite funny. Not the way you usually think of India. It´s like these pictures from Iran: ... http://www.pathfindertravels.nu/pages/iran2.html

I don't know what you usually think of when you think of India, but the Indian Army has more combat experience in high-mountain conditions than pretty much any army in the world. Indian and Pakistani troops have been facing and fighting each other on the Siachen Glacier since at least 1984. The glacier is 20,000 feet above sea level.

I won't waste bandwidth linking to the pictures directly, since they are not "Today's Pics" and are thus off topic, but there are plenty of images, and a little background information, here:

http://users.senet.com.au/~wingman/siachen.html

and some better images here:

Be honest, when I think of India, I think of hot, dry or hot, wet. Of course India is vast, with quite a range of climates but one might well be forgiven for falling into the trap of the stereotype.

No offense, oldsoak - but you can't tell me people don't know of the Himalayas, Sir George Everest and the Survey of India or that the Dala-i-Lama resides adjacet to Tibet on the Indian side?

And of course there are the lush tropics of the south that include the old Portugese colonies of Goa and Cochin and jungles that extend to Sri Lanka.....
;)

Dave the Dawg is right. India AND Pakistan are the most battle-hardened high altitude fighters in recent times at elevations of 21,500ft (Conway Saddle) and elswhere in the Siachen!

"Saddam Hussein became the first leader in the world to systematically and aggressively gas his own people. Between 1983 and 1988 alone, he murdered more than 30,000 Iraqi citizens with mustard gas and nerve agents. Several international organizations claim that he killed more than 60,000 Iraqi citizens with chemicals, including large numbers of women and children. During his two-year Anfal campaign against the Kurdish population, Saddam Hussein used these chemical weapons against more than 40 villages."

Terrorizing Kuwait, kicking UN Weapon's inspectors out, violating GW1 peace terms, shooting at coalition aircraft enforcing the no-fly zone, syphoning BILLIONS in Oil of Food money to build lavish palaces while his own people suffered - shame on you for doing NOTHING about it!

Has the Iraqish army the same uniforms as the US army?

The Iraqi Civil Defence Corps is more akin to a state police/ National Gaurd I believe that handles situations in Iraqi itself. They use the old style US 6 color "Chocolate Chip" camo that US forces used in the first Gulf War (1991). The current US desert camo is the 3 color (Also worn by Danish troops I believe).

The Iraqi Army is only barely in existance, the first classes graduating last month I believe. Their uniform is very similar to the 6 color worn by the CDC but incorporates some patches of light green into it.

US forces do have body armor- it's the woodland (green) vests you see US troops wearing.

Afghanistan doesn't exist? Tell that to the families of the troops killed there this week.

‘Neither drunk nor sunstruck,’ said Dravot. ‘We have slept over the notion half a year, and require to see Books and Atlases, and we have decided that there is only one place now in the world that two strong men can Sar-a-whack. They call it Kafiristan. By my reckoning it’s the top right-hand corner of Afghanistan, not more than three hundred miles from Peshawar. They have two-and-thirty heathen idols there, and we’ll be the thirty-third and thirty-fourth. It’s a mountainous country, and the women of those parts are very beautiful.

Yo He219 Uhu - :D yes, know all about the Hindu Kush and all that, just still think of India as a hot place. No good reason why, bit like thinking Indian food is all curries - when in fact the cusine is incredibly varied. Must sort out these stereotypes sometime after tiffin.

BBC TV reporter Andrew Gilligan who interviewed the late weapons advisor David Kelly arrives at the BBC headquarters at Portland Place in London Wednesday Jan. 28, 2004. Lord Hutton cleared Prime Minister Tony Blair's administration Wednesday of any direct involvement in the suicide of a government expert on Iraqi weapons but criticized the BBC for its reporting in the scandal that shook the British leadership. andrew giligan is not a TV reporter, I should know I'm a BBC addict. He does (did) a radio program in the morning, I'd never heard of him until the whole thing erupted.

Not making any statement on Iraq here, but how does Hitler not qualify as the first leader to do these things?

Because Hitler directed is genocidal campaign at neighboring populations as well. In fact, IIRC, the majority of the Jews who perished in death camps were from Poland and Russia. I think what they mean is that Hussein's regime was the first one to engage in massive gassing of his own population only. This said, those two mustaches are in the same league in my book.

 ...oh please, you win. I only used those reds coats, Dravot and Carnehan, for my own purposes(Kipling forgive me): In India THERE IS snow, a lot, I know they leave India in their journey to Kafiristan, btw many people out of India listened about Kashmir and some little hills like Namga Parbat or Gasherbrun.
