DETROIT -- The Detroit Police Department, on the heels of a decision to lay off 150 officers, wants to buy a $743,000 urban assault vehicle that can traverse rivers, is resistant to landmines and is equipped with periscopes.

The Detroit City Council is expected today to approve purchasing "The Commander" general-purpose vehicle for use in executing drug raids. It also could be used in case of a terrorist attack or a natural disaster.

I am of the opinion that more police officers patroling and enforcing the law is more effective than a reactionary "Wunder Machine".

Couldn't agree more. 150 cops can cover alot more ground than 1 APC. Taking cops off the street will only serve to further alienate them from the community.

They're hardly trading 150 officers for 1 APC. The APC costs 743k, there's no way in hell you could afford 50 police officers for 743k, let alone 150, not to mention a police officer has a higher recurring cost.

I don't know what police officers get paid, but think that $743,000 is better spent on cruisers and other equipment they may need. Unluss, of course, they have everything they need and it's surplus...or it could be surplus from laying off 150 officers.

Either way it's Detroit, and I live no where near there.

how about a new mayor?

That's the first step, throw his ass in jail! He makes crooked politicians seem tame!!! Second, you bring in the bulldozers and level the whole place. If you can't get enough bulldozers...NUKE 'EM!

Its all about management. There are plenty of cities that are understaffed in the area of law enforcement and cope just fine. New Orleans is one of them. The chief who just resigned was instrumental in turning New Orleans around when others before him couldn't with the same sized police force. Given the size of Detroit, I find it pathetic that they cannot police that city.
