Ya, I heard about this. I don’t think we should put pressure on Turks and Caicos, rather they should be able to join Canada if they decide it is in the best interest of the nation. There is fear that an overwhelming number of Haitian refugees would land on the island claiming Canadian immigrant status under a refugee title. Let Turks and Caicos decide if they want to be our most southern province. I am content either way.
Persuading the federal goverment is a different story.

How nice it would be to get posted to a base there.

I doubt it's going to happen. Canada first propsed this idea way back in 1915 if you can believe it. Then the Turks & Caicos came to us in the 1970's and asked to join as a territory/colony/province or anything, and we (Trudeau) said no.
Then they were being administered (poorly) by the Brits via Jamaica or the Bahamas IIRC and to be honest really didn't have much to offer us.
These days the tourist infrastructure (mostly high end) is well established and between that and off shore banking they're doing fairly well. Prices for imports are high, but no GST or the excessive taxation we see here, and I doubt any inclination to have it introduces.
Real shame though, I was there last Feb and nice place and nice people.

hmmm, I watched a special on CBC news world and they had a represenative from Turks and Caicos who alluded that the island would still process an offer if Canada did want to amalgamate the island into the greater realm of Canada.

You certainly are coming back in full swing even though I was one of the few people that stood up for you in that plea to get you banned.

What are the Downsides to an alliance? for canada of course. cause i'm liking this idea.

Downsides for who us or them?
For them I'd say having to put up with our bureaucracy, high taxation levels, political correctness, leaders with no moral fibre etc. etc.
For us, well I think what killed it in the1970's aside from ole PETs aversion to anything tainted with Imperialism was the fact that we may have had to absorb 20,000 odd new citizens, and offer them the joys of our welfare state. With us picking up the tab.
That's probably not the case now as I noted their economy is much better off. I think this may be a ploy, or tactic to get full independance or more likely a better deal from the Brits. Full independance means they'd ( the new Government) would have to take over the costs of the social safety net in place. Now the British tax payer pays for it.
Oh BTW sorry there for hi-jacking this thread with informed political discourse and facts. I should have noticed it's main purpose was cut and pasting pre-pubescent name calling.

Im thinking that there are some great points for aquiring this colony/territory/province...really, for the exotic food, tourism and of course aquiring more territory!
Im proud of being an Imperialist Dog.

You certainly use a "glutenous" amount of that word.

On the plus side though if it did happen everything would be in Canadian Dollars. Right now the official currency is the US Dollar.
When I was there lunch for two at a run down beach bar in Cockburn Town (hamburger, beer, tuna salad and bottle of water) was $30.00 US.

Well Im all for it. We've foot the tab for plenty of stupid **** like the fast ferries and the FAC bull**** why not get into some gravy for once. Im sure if we took that money used on those two idiotic useless projects we'd have enough to rebuild the whole Island and buy everyone a weeks worth of Wendys n a 12 pack of beer.
We'd be stupid to pass up this oppertunity :cantbeli:

Bastardchild ( hey I like this forum no censor software), they probaly wouldn't want our beer. the local stuff was pretty good. I ended up grabbing six pack to drink on the cruise ship when we sailed out.
I agree though, with the morons in charge in Ottawa, or Victoria or most provincial capitals these days what's another billion here of there eh. Oh that's right we might actually have something to show for this time out.
