"Boeing and its joint-venture partner Bell Helicopter apologized yesterday for a magazine ad published a month ago — and again this week by mistake — depicting U.S. Special Forces troops rappelling from an Osprey aircraft onto the roof of a mosque."

Full story and picture here (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2002532657_boeingad1m.html)

Personally I can't help but feel whoever came up with this idea needs his arse kicking if only for the crap slogan.

To be honest...I would LOVE to have a poster of that...however, what a stupid, stupid thing to do.

Well, you know what kind of people work in the advertising branch... they just photoshopped the Helo and Background together.

Jeeze! You'd think they'd have someone review these ads before they are published.

That's like the Vioxx "scandal". Merck's sales force put together a packet of information for doctors that was evidence against the claims Vioxx is dangerous.

Some brilliant guy named the program "Dodgeball".

My first question was - what makes them think that building is a mosque?

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABPub/2005/09/30/2002532395.jpg

The company statements were released yesterday in response to an outcry from the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Washington, D.C.-based Islamic civil-liberties group. The building depicted in the ad has an Arabic sign that translates as "Muhammad Mosque," according to the council.

I can't even see the sign they're talking about. Anybody else see it? And for our members that speak Arabic...can you read it?

I guess we'll just have to take the Council's word for it. The sign (that I can't see) might just as well say McDonalds.

I'm also having trouble reading some of the text on the lower left hand side, perhaps it was clearer in the magazine print?

To be truthful I fisrt thought it was a mosque due to the dome and pointy bit on top (That's a technical architectural term). I'm not sure why but to me a dome and pointy bit say mosque the same way a spire says church.

Well I guess the original photograph has a much higher resolution and/or somebody simply recognized the building ...

Well, we all know that Uncle Sam's foes have "never" and I really mean "never" used a mosque to house weapons caches or shoot at our troops.

It appears to be all the companies involved with the Osprey.

And how exactly is that offensive?

Would make a cool poster though.

I'd imagine some Christians would be upset if an Arab company produced an advert showing one of their products being used in a raid on a church.

Plus...they are using religion "it decends from heaven to hell" and since its rappelling into a Mosque it makes it seem like hell

I'd re-read the poster again, it doesn't mention decending to hell, rather it unleashes hell, big difference.

I guess the domed roof and the crescent on the pole in the center of the dome make the building a mosque, or at least sufficiently mosque-like to be seen as one by Muslims, the same way a gothic roofs with a bell tower and tincted glass would have made it look like a Christain church.

However, I think CAIR would have protested even if the ad had shown a bazaar or a typical Arab street.

Since we finally got over the "Freedom fries crisis", maybe the Osprey team should have the troops rappel into the Elysée Palace, or the Arc de Triomphe ? ;)

The script in the ad has a nice pitch !

Overall: CLASSIC.

I wouldn't think that it looks like a mosque (but hey, what do i know), but boeing certainly loses points for cultural sensitivity.

"We didn't mean it" , as if !

As we can clearly see from the image above, a Dome doesn't make a Mosque.

Apparently brought to you by the same people who want to change the British flag.

Anything else we can change while we're at it?
