View Full Version : enlisting in the corps
i have one problem though. should i inform them up front that i smoked marijuana twice?
it is the one thing that i would take back and only did it because my friends wouldnt shut up about it. i have since moved one and have not touched it for years.
anyone else have a similar problem? what did you do?

One thing, you might not want to tell them you forgot how to spell corps once ;)
If you haven't touched it for years or been exposed to it, you should be okay. Telling them might not be the best idea, but if you haven't smoked it in a few years you should pass the drug test

First off, it's The Corps, not the core. Secondly, tell them about the weed, two times will not DQ you, how old are you now, how old were you when you smoked it?

It shouldn't be a problem as long as you get the waiver for it. I've known all sorts of guys in the Corps (note spelling please) who have extensive drug histories.
So long as you never got arrested for it though, a conviction, even as a juvenile, could jeopardize your chances.
And so long as you're done with it. The Marines will forgive your past, but it will not tolerate any usage while serving, and for good reason.
**** sorry  and i knew that too, just had a massive brain fart.

One of the principles of being a Marine is INTEGRITY. Admit your your past drug use and tell the recruiter you learned from the mistakes you made in your past as a youth.
It seems to me some folks here forgot what being a Marine was all about and need to look the word typed in boldface up in the dictionary. Telling the kid to lie is not starting him off on the right foot.

admit it, and suck it up -- hell, i know someone who worked at the cia who admitted, on polygraph, to smoking pot more than 300 times
the integrity is the thing getting to me. i want to start off being honest and i also heard that it can come back to bite me in the ass big time if i dont disclose it.

You have been lying to your buddies about jerking off and scoring with girls for years. Honestly, is getting high twice going to affect your ability to carry out orders or pull the trigger? On the other hand, they really need recruits, so it may be overlooked.

dude its not the end of the world. Everybody i know even in places of authority have smoked weed.
I even know serving members of the armed forces that still smoke weed and manage to get away with it. Although i dont think very highly of them.

Typical answer from a typical blowhard. I'm sorry if things like integrity, honor, commitment, and discipline get in the way of your personal agenda. People with your attitude are a cancer on our military like the crew from Abu Gharaib. Lack of ethics, that seeems to be the problem plaguing the rest of you wingnuts these days.

Don't even worry about it rob, I know many Marines who did all kinds of drugs and made it through. Just tell them about it and trust me it won't disqualify you or anything like that even if you smoked the day before you came to the recruiter you recruiter will hook you up and wait a month to get it out of your system and then take you to medical.

If you want to be a Marine its best to start on the right foot by being completely honest. Don't forget that you should also think of your future after the Corps and what the consequences of lying be 10-15 years down the road.
Anyone who tells you to falsify statements, personal declarations and/or government paperwork which amounts to a fraudulent enlistment obviously does not have YOUR best interest in mind.
is there any chance this will keep me out though?
some one told me that "expiramental one time usage" doesnt even require a wavier.

Don't worry about it. Two times will not DQ you.
Just ask your recruiter.

You'll be fine. I know people with TS clearances that admitted to smoking weed hundreds of times in college. Experimental 1 or 2 times usage is overlooked. Especially if you're serious and haven't touched it in years.

It's better to admit it while on "the machine" than lie and have the g-damn needle jump off the paper right? Besides, you're not gonna beat the poly unless you're a psychopath or cool as icecubes. Anyways, to the initial question, you've smoked twice right? Whoop-dee-sh!t, tell them nothing and they'll know nothing, okay? If you're a chronic smoker that's one thing, but you're not so don't worry about it. You'll see people in the military who smoke more than that in a month.

Bingo!
Part of being a Marine is being able to stand up and face the music.
Being physically tough is important, but not nearly as important as being mentally tough.
It's not a disqualifier, but it will show you have integrity.

You will want to tell your recruiters that you have infact used drugs. Because if they do find out, you will be sent to an ELS platoon if caught in basic training, and discharged for fraudulant enlistment.

one of the main things i think about the USMC is their motto " Semper FI" or always faithful. This is key to remember if you really want to be a Marine. It means being faithful to the Corps, to others, and MOST importantly to yourself! Follwoing this motto is not just a mentality, its a way of life. Being truthful to the Corps is one of the best things you can do. And lets face it, once you get it over with, the weight will be off your shoulders!

Navy bootcamp they were called "drugs and bugs" company. Those poor slobs were cutting grass and policing up cigerette butts and all kinds of **** work until they were discharged. Fess up, but go in clean because they do test all recruits and there is zero tolerence.

i am going to meet with my recruiter later today, hes a good guy and for some reason i feel like im betrayed him by smoking even though i didnt know him at the time, but i guess its better then lying to him. :|

Goddamn, dude. Trying out weed isn't that great of an evil. Even using it socially, beyond experimentation, isn't that horrible. You're talking like you're going to be disqualified from military service, all your property seized, and placed on death row. You're not living in Singapore. Relax.

X2 what ratamascue wrote. You don't have to feel guilty about having smoked weed a couple of times. Even though it's illegal, it something most young people try. It's when you become a total pothead, spend half your life on your parents' couch, and don't amount to anything because you're a lazy sacko'**** that you have to be ashamed. Don't sweat it!!!!

Like rat and gaijin just reiterrated. Don't sweat it and for Chrissakes don't lie. Not because of what Nikitaras and Matchanu told you about Integrity. Although that should be THE motivating factor.... But mostly because your responses in this thread prove you are an absolute clusterf*ck under pressure. Do not even try to lie. They will know. Then they will spank you. Tell them you tried it and didn't like it and didn't do it anymore. End. You sound like a guy that just drank a case of Old Milwaukee and then figured he'd cruise the high school for some low self esteem girls and got pulled over by the cops....

It can if you dont tell the Corp that you have infact tried drugs. Fradualte enlistment is a serious thing. The marines are trying to keep the corp drug free, and they take it serious. Officers and senior NCO's(along with recruits) get one and only one strike and they are out. And the rest of the enlisted personel are give a second chance if they're lucky.
