im sorry for the loss
ok without flaming my ignorance. can someone explain the differences between sunni, shiite, and shia? maybe a really stupid question but id just like to understand better
I'm assuming that both Shia and Sunni celebrate Ramadan?
shia and shiite is the same thing. its just a matter of how you write it.
Yes shia and sunnis celebrate same holidays, same prayer times and everything else but the difference lies in the philosophy. It goes back the times after the death of prophet mohamad and who was supposed to lead (Calipha) the muslims after his death.
The 2 groups were the prophets family and his friends. The first 3 caliphas were the prophet's friends and the 4th was his daughters husband Ali. He was killed and that was were the split started. Those who followed Ali became known as shia and those who didnt became known as sunni. After the death of ali the calipha killed everyone from the prophets family, his grandsons and took his daughters as prisoners. So how could someone who is leading the muslims kill the prophet's grandsons, destroy mecca, spread sin within the muslim empire ?
Even sunnis have many sects within, for example Salafis and Wahabis (flourished under the british rule of the arab peninsula) who are the extremists such as zarqawi, bin laden, the saudi royal family, algerians etc...
Why do salafis hate shia so much? Because they believe that shia muslims view ali as the prophet and not mohamed. There are other reasons again related to how shia and sunni interpret the quran and all that.
The incident is way more detailed than this, you might want to google it or something.
