A few days ago the carcass of a stranded 50 tonne sperm whale suddenly exploded in mid downtown of the Taiwanese city of Tainan, as it was being transported to a nearby university for autopsy. Splaying nearby shopping fronts, cars, and pedestrians with blood and whale intestines.

Thats a bit graphic, what fascinated me was the lastpicture showing the size of those animals. Quite impressive.

Caused by a build up of gastric gasses post-mortem, which couldn't vent normally (i.e. fart/burp).

In my former life as an officer of Her Majesty's customs, one of my jobs was Receiver of Wreck. In the UK, all whales (only >25' in Scotland) belong to HM the Queen when washed up.............don't ask me why.........and therefore have to be tasken into posession by HM Customs. Similar happening have occurred in the UK, but not in a city centre. We normally buried/burned the carcases, or towed them out to se and sunk them. Explosions were not uncommon in the disposal process, although these were normally PE-induced!

I can't get that video to work but if its the same one i saw years ago then basically the local council deciedes to blow up a whale and bits go everywhere,. all the spectators start running and large chunks of whale land on several cars doing lots of damage. Don't think anybody was hurt and i remember pissing myself laughing.

It's a quicktime movie. Try "Save ass" and play it from your computer.
As for your description of the video it appears like it's the one you think of.

Anyway this whale thing makes me sort of nostalgic. Used to eat a lot of whale meat when I was a kid (both cheap and abundant before commercial whaling ended during the early 70's).
Anyway the all time ace of whale gunners lived not far from where I was brought up. Think he shoot around 400 whales or something (most of them big mature bluewhales) in one record season in the Antarctic ocean during the mid 50's.
On another occasion he harpooned a whale from 600 meters (which also is something of a record).

Yeah I read about this yesterday. A friend of mine came up with a new mastercard commercial for this too:

Going to your favorite mall to buy a new blue outfit..... $100
Lunch at a trendy seafood resturant in your new outfit....$30

Knowing you just had your scooter washed and found it covered in week old whale guts.....priceless.

There are some things that money cant buy
for everything else theres theres mastercard
