SARDINIA, Italy -- NATO’s Destined Glory (Loyal Midas) 2005 is underway in the Thyrrenian Sea and Italian island of Sardinia. The exercise started September 29 and is scheduled to conclude on October 14.
This is “NATO’s premiere littoral exercise,” said British Rear Adm. David Cooke, deputy commander of Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO (STRIKFORNATO), the exercise’s designers.
“It is a major exercise in the NATO annual exercise calendar, because it involves considerable maritime-based forces,” he explained. “This year, there will be about 40 ships, 60 aircraft and about 8,500 personnel involved.”
“The purpose of the exercise is to allow the maritime component response force to train, certify and evaluate his task groups and task units - those that he will conduct operations with if called upon to do so,” said British Col. Jim Hutton, the exercise director.
“We have kept the scenario fairly simple,” he said. “It’s not meant to reflect anything that is actually happening in the world, but it does reflect the sorts of things that the response force might be used for.”
Sea, air and land forces from the participating countries will use this scenario to practice a variety of joint military operations.
“They will be conducting a range of missions and defense exercises, such as counter-submarine reconnaissance, fighting in the littoral areas and defensive maritime interdiction,” Col. Hutton said. “The 60 maritime patrol aircraft will be flying missions in support of the amphibious force. They will also be playing the role of opposition forces, flying against the maritime component commander, so he can conduct air defense and other preventive measures.” “The landing forces, which are Marines and Soldiers belonging to the amphibious element, will be practicing the nitty-gritty of moving from ships to the objective via helicopters, a range of boats and landing craft,” Hutton explained.
While much of the emphasis is in the air and on the ground, Destined Glory is primarily a maritime exercise, Rear Adm.Cooke stated: “We can provide logistic support from our ships; we can provide strike aircraft and helicopters, landing forces, taken ashore either in landing craft or by helicopter; we can provide all the backup, such as supplies and medical attention, that those forces require.”
“It is similar to past Destined Glory exercises in that we are building on our past experience,” Rear Adm. Cooke said. “What is different this year is that traditionally we have spent the first half of the exercise doing fairly simple procedures to make certain that the people knew the routine, could talk to each other, and could operate safely together.
“This year, we have introduced a much greater element of what is called ‘free play.’ That enables the maritime component commander to have to react to unexpected situations.
“In previous years, he has had a program to go by; this year, he doesn’t,” he continued. “This is the next level of complexity in these exercises, and NATO is ready for that now.”
Rear Adm. Cooke and Col. Hutton are among about 135 members of the STRIKFORNATO staff conducting the exercise, while embarked upon USS Mount Whitney (LCC/JCC 20), home ported in Gaeta, Italy.
