My friend and I had the chance to shoot a MP 5 (9mm), a Thompson sub-machine gun, and a MG-74. Full auto.... Here are some pics and video clips.
I didnt know that his camera made the videos in quicktime format, so I'm sorry about that part.

Cool. I shot an Uzi at the range over here last week. Surprisingly very little recoil; I was able to fire that thing on full auto, one-handed with my arm fully extended and no problem. They also had an MP-5 but unfortunately it was out for repairs.
How was the Tommy gun?

I, for one, am jealous! Thanks for sharing the pictures!
sweet MP5 I need to fire one of those sometime.
woot
MP5 is a sweet piece of firepower. They have one at the range here. Very accurate and controllable... They are thinking about gettin' a P90 here in a few months.. Man, that's going to be sweet.

MP5 had no recoil! That thing is as light as a feather too.
The Thompson was heavy, but there was almost no recoil also if you tucked it in nice.
The MG74 was a b*tch!
All in all, I had an awesome time. If anybody has the chance to shoot any full auto guns at a range, do it! woot

Yeah it was crazy. I feel sorry for all the Germans that had to carry that thing around, its heavy as hell.
If you get your position right, the recoil is not that strong and you are capable of delivering bursts at a very high rate with very high precision. It is heavy, but gives a lot more firepower than most other machineguns. I quote an American officer who went to the shooting range with us in A-stan: "You could take out a whole god damn infantry battalion with that thing".

Did you ever read about "WN 62" at the normandy landing? A single Soldier (Hein Severloh) took out nearly 1000 Soldiers with a MG42 on Omaha Beach...

I had a bad experience with the Thompson M1A1 which has turned me off to open bolt submachine guns. The bolt slammed forward when I pulled the trigger but the firing pin did not hit the primer, so when I was performing the IAD, I pressed the mag release and the weapon went off, had I not been aiming the weapon downrange, there could have been very bad consequences.
