View Full Version : Navy SEALs in Mogadishu OCT 93
I read the book Black Hawk Down, I know exactly what the Army Rangers and DELTA Operators were doing, but what was the mission of the Navy SEALs? Rangers had to make a perimiter around the targert in which Delta was working. Does anyone know what was the purpose of SEAL Team 6 in Mog?
Look cool, get a nice tan on the beaches and bang some starving chicks...

Damn, Haiw! You never told us you had access to classified after-action reports! rofl
Seriously, though, I remember reading on the BHD forums that SEALs were part of the ground extraction force, providing sniper cover to the convoy.
Baking cakes.
I thought that was what the female Delta "funny platoon" was for... ;)

If I remember correctly they were snipers from ST-6 and they were with the ground convoy. One of them was shot in the knife, yes the knife. He lived so no worries.

i have the book, but too lazy to get it out. IIRC an AK47 round hit his knife which was hanging from his leg. the knife took the brunt of the bullet and it shattered. the shattered fragments hit his leg, but other than that he was ok. after the battle he tried to sponsor the knife maker company, saying that it could stopa AK round (read the footnotes at the end, thats where i got it).

It was a Randall Mk 1. If I recall correctly, he had the surgeon seal the shrapnel in a baggy and let him keep it.

Yeah...
Operation United Shield, Somalia, 1995. USMC is tasked with covering the withdrawal of UN Forces. Does the USMC send a single MEU(SOC) or an infantry battalion as a Special MAGTAF? No... they send different companies from a number of battalions. At the time, I was a (not so humble) Lance Corporal. I thought a bunch of BN COs wanted their fingers in the United Shield Pie.
John Gay was the SEAL who's knife stopped the bullet.
Why don't you guys read more...

The SEALs were from DEVGRU (former ST-6) and were part of the JSOTF (along with USAF PJs and CCT, ISA, Delta, TF 160, Rangers, JCU and other JSOC units). All four of them received awards for their actions during Operation Gothic Serpent (the actual raid).

Operation Gothic Serpent was the name for the overall all mission of Task Force Ranger, not just the raid into the Bakara Market.
