Yes, that is an SR-71. The flight deck on the Intrepid has a ridiculous number of fighters and recon aircraft from just about every region of the world, and the hanger deck is loaded with some more as well as NASA capsules, WW2 aircraft, etc.

Every year there's an event called "Fleet Week" when a whole bunch of US and international ships come into New York harbor for liberty while giving tours of the ships and whatnot.

I remember the first time I went to the museum, one of the curators was a WWII vet who actually served on the Intrepid and told us about the time it was bombed by the japs. The interesting thing about the story was that we were standing in the exact spot where a bomb came through the flight deck but didnt explode while he was telling us about it.

I remember that, but wasn't it a Kamikaze attack? That's how I remember it as anyway. I'm pretty sure there's a memorial there too about a sailor on the ship that fended off a bunch of Kamikazes with a lone AA gun.

I am not saying, that they are equal! Read this post!
Doesn't Force Recon carry out the same mission as a Army LRSU/LRSD? (Long Range Survellience Unit or Detachment)
In essence, provide real-time intell to the Division/Brigade commander?

Dominique
01-31-2004, 08:54 PM
Nope. Army LRSU (LRSD/LRSC) are a differnet animal. They both carry our reconnaissance missions though. I'll post both of thier mission profiles as soon as I dig up some of my old files.

I went through Squad Leaders school with a Force Recon Marine. His MOS was actually was Motor T. Back in '99... I think. Pretty Funny actually... another Marine from my Battalion that was in the course with me, beat him in the ruck run during our qualifying week. He never lived it down. I think they sent him to SL course after BRC to get him up on his infantry skills... tough guy.

I worked with a guy who was supply, did the Force indoc, and made it. Interesting...

I am not so good as a swimmer... I tend to sink... I was happy enough as an 0311.
