French Prime Minister Alain Juppe guilty of involvement in a party funding scam in Paris in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Jacques Chirac's closest adviser and designated successor guilty of corruption (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3444239.stm)

He had widely been expected to run as the centre-right's candidate in the 2007 presidential election if Jacques Chirac does not seek a third term.

"It's a hammer blow for Jacques Chirac, who thus loses his closest adviser and his designated successor, for whom he had real affection," Anita Hauser, political commentator.

The court gave him an 18-month suspended sentence and barred him from political office for up to 10 years.

However, he will be able to continue as mayor of Bordeaux, and as head of the governing UMP party during the appeal.

The prosecution argued that Juppe allowed party employees to be put on the city payroll and to be paid for by private companies when he was deputy mayor of Paris.

Mr Chirac was then the city's mayor.

Juppe denied the charges, saying that he put an end to all irregularities as soon as he found out about them.

It'd be sweet if he was in charge of France.

Then his midget ass would have to quit smacking his wife. Or not.

The charge isn't corruption but political interrest used of public money!
He 's accused to use Paris's money to pay some of people of his party!

Here, business companies can't give money to party (unlike USA where Bush campaign was paid by Halliburton....), so most of politicals used non legal ways to pay their people and campaign!
Plenty of politicals (left to right) were strike by justice since 15years due to these arrengements.
Several years ago a law gave public found to each party. Every years the different party receive money in proportion to the number of their votes after each elections!

btw Berlusconi the Bush friend went in politic to escape justice! He won as he put some laws that put him outside of judge's eyes!
We also could have a look on Bush who use US taxes to help his campaing 's supports (Bechtel, Halliburton...).

Any legal system that collars a powerful politician and brings him to book is to be congratulated.

'Chirac sinks deeper into mire of scandal'

"M Halphen summoned the president as a witness in the case, but after months of delay M Chirac succeeded in having the law on presidential immunity changed to protect him from legal suits while in office."

Impressive.

i thought chirac had to get himself elected or he would be going to jail this year.
unfortunatly too many left wing candidates let le pen scrape through to the next round.
then you had the choice between fresh newly laid runny pile of dung
or old dried out dung that does'nt smell
