Kabul — A rocket exploded outside the Canadian ambassador's residence in the Afghan capital on Wednesday.

Two local men believed to be guards employed at the residence were injured in the blast just before dawn.

"We had guards from a local company and two of them were injured," a Canadian embassy official in Kabul said. "The rocket in fact struck very close to our embassy residence."

The area of the city is heavily protected because it is home to buildings housing offices and residences of foreign governments. It was not clear whether the Canadian building was damaged.

The new Canadian ambassador to Afghanistan, David Sproule, has been in the country for about a week, said the Canadian government official. It was not known where Sproule was when the rocket exploded.

It was blind luck that they came that close. All they do over here is lean a couple rockets up against a pile of rocks, on the side of a mountain, and shoot a rough azimuth to make sure it goes more or less towards it's intended target, set up a simple time-delayed fuze and walk away. It's extremely rare for rockets to hit where they were aimed at. Mortars are a little different, usually they'll set the tube up, throw a couple rounds and get out quick before we figure out where it came from.

Yeah and my buddies over there were telling me their base is in a valley, and all that happens is rockets fly overhead and **** like that
