Stockholm - A Swedish man who donated his sperm to a lesbian couple must pay child support for the three boys he fathered, the Supreme Court has ruled.
The man, now 39, gave his sperm to the couple in the early 1990s. Three sons were born in the years 1992 to 1996.
He agreed he would play no role in the boys' upbringing, but signed a document saying he was the father. The women separated and the biological mother demanded that the man pay child support. The man went to the district and appeals courts, but lost. The Supreme Court upheld these rulings. - Sapa-AFP

Bringing up the kids with her "life partner" as their own, then when it all goes **** up, she's quick enough to grab his money...Whats even more screwed is the fact the courts upheld her claim!!!!

I've heard of similar cases before myself. It is pretty freakin' messed up to do something like this to the donor.

I don't know what the whole circumstances are in this case, but I don't think couples (gay or not) should be allowed to adopt children unless they are going to both be legally responsible for the child regardless of the outcome of their relationship.
I'm speculating that the lesbian partner that was not biologically linked to the baby bailed on her former partner altogether and then, out of sheer financial desperation, the mother sued the sperm donor. I'd be interested to know if she tried to sue her partner for child support first.

I suppose the moral of the story is --- keep your sperm to yourself lest you be willing to take a life time of responsiblity on.
While I understand the need some have to raise a biological child, there are enough abandoned children in the world waiting to be adopted as it is.
thats very true, i dont plan on being a donor unless a contract is written and it clarifies that if the two break up then its the other spouse not myself that will have to pay the child support

I'm not sure that would even hold up in court. I'm fairly certain I read of a guy losing in court despite an agreement like that. Wish I could rememeber where I read it. Though it may not have been an agreement prepared by lawyers.

I agree. The basic facts are that he supplied 1/2 of the genetic material to produce another human being, and bears responsibility for the resulting human(s), regardless of whatever silly contract they made up. His sperm was not used to make jams or jellies - it made several children that need food, clothes, and rent for 18 years. That money he is paying is not for the woman involved, it's to provide for the children he made. Contrary to what some would like to believe (including this woman and man) -children are not an accessory like a handbag.

Total speculation, but the mother probably did need financial help. I'd rather her go back to the father than get government assistance (which the rest of us pay for).
I'd bet money her lawyer told her she had no legal recourse against her former life partner because they probably made a personal arrangment with this man for his sperm in order to get around gay marriage and/or adoption laws. The other woman was likely able to walk away from the child because there were no legal or biological ties to the child.
In other words, this guy screwed himself by 1] taking pitty on them and helping OR 2] trying to make a profit off his sperm or 3] needed to get laid. Whatever his motivation was..... he didn't think it through.
Be responsible for your own sperm.

That's what the court established here; you can't make such a contract. In don't know about the US though...
damn now people look at sperm like a paycheck....sad
