The nominees are also believed to include Pope John Paul II and the European Union itself.

They have been put forward by a Norwegian politician who said ousting the dictator had reduced the threat of a war with weapons of mass destruction.

Hmm, don't know what to think of this really...

Exactely my thoughts when I first heard it.... Nobel prize already went down the drain after Arafat got it, but this really takes the cake.

According to this , becoming a nominee isn't the big deal . To win it is all other story (Well , Arafuk won it , so ...)

Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler and former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic have made it to the list -- every member of all the world's parliaments, university professors from law to theology, ex-winners and committee members can submit names.

I bet Arafuk (as a former winner) can submit Sheih Yassin name to the list . That would be cool !!

Two points:
1) It means nothing to be nominated for the peace prize. As you can see (http://www.nobel.se/peace/nomination/nominators.html), the number of people who may nominate someone for the peace prize is very large, including any legislator from any country and earth. The number of people who can actually vote on conferring the prize is far, far smaller. A quick google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&c2coff=1&q=nominated+%22nobel+peace%22&btnG=Google+Search) shows the variety of people and organizations that have been nominated, including the International Solidarity Movement, the game of soccer, an american death-row inmate, and former energy secretary Bill Richardson.
2) Neither Bush nor Blair will win.

EDIT: Javehn beat me to it =([/i]

How can you nominate an alliance of countries (European Union) for the Nobel Peace Prize? I thought it went to INDIVIDUALS.

How's this: I nominate Planet Earth for the Nobel Peace Prize :cantbeli:

ow can you nominate an alliance of countries (European Union) for the Nobel Peace Prize? I thought it went to INDIVIDUALS.The rules allow organizations to win the prize, and its not so rare for that to happen. Just off the top of my head, the UN, the Red Cross, and Doctors without Borders, have all won.

Oh, and StarvingStudent: if you do a really good job at your studies, and end up a professor, you probably could formally nominate the earth for a prize. Doubt it'd win, though. =)

Pardon me but what Peace is that?
They never started the war did they ,so in effect these 50 million people were living in Peace time conditions anyway, albeit under regimes, and right now as a war ravages their lands and they die daily, and are far from being Free........you have an odd perception of Peace!!

There is no peace in Iraq or Afghanistan right now, they are not even stable, the Iraqi's are living under occupation......that is not living in peace.

Tony Blair is a slimey lying foker who need's to get bitch slapped by the entire British Army for sending them into 2 wars without the proper kit..instead of being nominated for a bloody peace prize[/quote]

A long peace will never come without a lengthy struggle. Look at history.

Had we not flexed our muscles in the cold war, things could have been different.

And you cant always say there isnt peace beacause there is war, because in some cases war is for the purpose of peace, as in this war. Removing terrorists, tracking the movement of weapons and drugs and people, and destroying two opressive and brutal regimes definately pushes peace. As for the EU, they dont deserve ****. They dont even deserve the oil that they traded with iraq for safety.

How does one go about creating an "international prize" to be awarded?

Do I have to invent something momentous like TNT to be prominence?

Einstein worked on the atom bomb, which killed thousands, but he won the nobel prize.

Remember, killing terrorist isnt the only Bush does right. He also sends more food aid to poor countries than any other nation. He sent American forces to Iran to help after the quake. Hes working to make strides in fuel technology, aviation security and very important is his plans to return people to space.

...But then again, they always did hand these things out to regular Joe Shmoes... :cantbeli:

usa whatever you say won't work. Once poeple have their minds set, they won't look at the positives of something.

No President is ever perfect , yet you must still weigh the positives from the negatives (although the negatives or positives are still debatable).

In this world as long as man lives, bad people will opress the weak, and war is brought on them when the good people have had enough of it. And it's true in history as usa says.

And about Saddam Hussein finally getting his... it was like this joke I heard (if I can tell it correctly). "When we were children, we did some dumbass things. But one time we got a good beating for something we didn't do. Some lady lost something of hers and told our mother that it was us who stole it. She right away grabbed the belt and started spanking me and my brothers in the ass. We told her that we swore it wasn't us. Then she said this, "Well then, this is for all the times that you did do something stupid that I didn't catch you for."

As far as the Nobel Peace Prize and even though I support the war, I wouldn't vote for them. And I do personally feel that I was a bit led on with WMD, and if it's there or not I wouldn't care and neither do my friends out there serving. Freeing the opressed is much more important, at least to a man who wouldn't want to stand on the side and do nothing.

Edited: grammar, i'm a bit tired after a nice long ruck.

Einstein worked on the atom bomb, which killed thousands, but he won the nobel prize.
Einstein never worked on the bomb. He only engineerd the basic knowledge necessary for the concept of an atomic bomb.

Bush's policies have polarised the world and have given the terrorists more recruits with his crusading good vs evil 'you're with us or your against us' rhetoric, add this to turning a blind eye to the actual terrorist hotbeds such as Saudi Arabia, and instead invading a country that had jack s*** to do with international terrorism.
Iraqis may now have a future free of Saddam and Afghanistan with the Taliban (in Kabul at least), but in the bigger picture Bush has made the world a much more dangerous place.

I vote Haiw as well. Not that he'll win. I'll leak out sensitive infomation about him called Bud a drink fit only for dogs and then he'll never win and will fall into the shadow of self doubt and take to living in the gutter.

Blair and Bush can get nominated for however many peace prizes they want but i don't see them winning any.

Aren't we living in an interesting world?
Starting a war for "peace" is like screwing for virginity.

Soon they will award Nobel prizes to pedophiles and serial killers for humanely killing excessive population.
Nobel award has been totally corrupted, first Kissinger and Arafat and now this.

Bush and Blair do not deserve to be nominated for the prize, let alone win it.
I'd nominate the men and women of the British Armed Forces for fighting in a war that was morally wrong, and succeding in objective despite having little equipment. And for being cautious in the advance on Basra despite the yank Generals telling them they should **** it and charge the city and shooting anything that moves.

Also, did any other Brits watch that program on Channel 4 on Saturday? How America and Britain got it wrong

Argyll
02-05-2004, 04:41 AM
I watched it..........very interesting....especially the attitudes displayed by some of the guys being interviewed and filmed..........especially the part about ......".there are no innovent bystanders during a gunbattle!!"

I think if you've never seen or heard a gunbattle before it's pretty natural to have a look and see where it's coming from, and who is doing it especialy if your country is being invaded by your enemy!!

a total disregard for an Army of Liberation.........

Gringo
02-05-2004, 04:46 AM
What really got me was when that Marine officor was giving his briefing he said something like "Shoot anything that moves".
And there was also that part where the US troops ambushed and shot at every vehicle fleeing south from Baghdad, and all of them were civilians. Total ignorance!

I think all you americans should vote for John Kerry for president, then the american people would be a clear winner of the Nobel Peace price. Free the world from the retarded Bush! Find a president with an IQ of at least 90...
