My stupid computer keeps crashing. It seems to be working fine, and then with no warning at all, it just shuts down. So far, I've been able to restart. (after it does this disc consistency check) Any ideas????

Thanks in advance.... you're the best.... :) (but don't tell Joe I said so....) p-)

jacks not here right now, but:

* in sexy voice * the doctor is in. :D

does the computer turn off suddenly as in the screen goes black and the computer disks spin down, etc? or does it shut down suddenly as in you don't tell it to shut down, but the computer begins the process of shutting down and then shuts down after a few seconds?

if it is the last one, then it might be because of that virus (sobig?).

if the screen goes blank, are you hitting the power strip underneath the desk? are any power connections loose?

it shuts down like your first example.....it just goes black. I've checked all the connections, and the powerstrip isn't under the desk, so there is no way that I can hit it. Any other ideas?

btw.... your "the doctor is in" thing made me laugh. :)

if you're not hitting the powerstrip, and the power connections are not loose, then either: there is something wrong with your power supply unit (the thing in the back of the computer where the power cord is attached), OR: you are getting power surges in your house (temporary blackout/brownout).

do the lights flicker during the time frame when your computer suddenly turns off?

but faulty hard drives wouldn't make the whole computer turn off suddenly. it would report an error or something, not do a hard shutdown.

that's the first time i heard about a computer doing a hard shut off with a bad hard drive.

farmgirl, if you touch the power button on the computer (the one you press when you turned the computer on) when it is already on, does the computer turn off instantly or does it go through a shut down procedure?

and how old is your Compaq?

If it's the HD (hard drive), you simply need to get a new one, and hope you can transfer all your stuff over to the new one before the old one bites the dust. You can get this done at a number of places, but the bigger stores are likely to charge an arm and a leg, smaller, non-chain, computer stores are better, they are more likely to have real experts who know what they're doing. But, it doesn't sound like a HD problem to me.

Sounds like the power supply to me. Happened to my brothers computer a while back, power supply went, and the computer would just shut down. Or, it could be the mother board or power supply fan that's failed. This would cause it to over heat and shut down, happens to my GF's family's comp all the time, because they can't afford to replace the dead power supply fan. If it's the fan, simple fix, just get it replaced, same with the power supply. Again, I recommend the smaller computer shops, as they are real experts, not highschool teens trained in the back room like many large chain stores.

OK the story so far:

“Jack is called over to Farm Girl’s house for computer fixing duties, after jack places a screwdriver into the power supply he is zapped with exactly 1 billion volts of hard-core American electricity.
This new found power awakes a beast from Jacks loins and soon Farm Girl witness’s the birth of the DONG MAN (copyright 2004 – mocking loudly characters).

After a few minutes satisfying Farm Girl with an erotic foot rub, Dong man solves the Iraq, Afghanistan and North Korea issues (all the while providing erotic foot rubs to the ladies….and those that look enough like the female species).”

I plan to work in some midgets, a blind donkey and several former circus freaks.

Well personally it could be a few things wrong with your computer.

The way you worded it it kinda sounds like a virus possibly. I know theres plenty of trojans/virus's (possibly boot virus) that will do that to a computer (I love the random shutdown-remote shutdown features). I'd try to see if you can get a virus scan of your C: drive possibly(thats assuming you can keep it on long enough to attempt it).

Also have that fan checked, otherwise its toasty motherboard.... :cantbeli:

I sorta had the same problem a while back with my computer. One day I went to turn it on and the computer would start loading up then crash immediately. I shut off my power bar n turned it back on and it fixed it.

It could be possibly your hard drive, but pootched hard drives rarely make it even into windows (especially IBM drives... :cantbeli: ) But if she wasnt hearing and nasty ticks or nasty sounds coming from the hard drive most likely it wasnt that.

Let me know how it goes there farmgirl

My .02 on this-

Hmm, if it just suddenly went -click- and crashed from your desktop, it's one thing. If it goes through a nice orderly windows shutdown sequence, it's another. If it's shutting down normally, then some bit of software within XP is telling it to do that - and with no windows warning message, it doesn't seem to be anything "bad".

A plain-jane PC running XP will not shut down automatically if the processor gets too hot, or the PS voltages are out of range. But there are utilities out there that if run, can make it do this. So it's helpful to know if your machine is running any of these. All the ones I've used have also flashed very obvious warning messages prior to shutdown.

Also - how long will it run before it shuts down? In other words - if you start it up after it's been sitting a long time (and cooled off) will it run longer than if it's been on a while? Is this a desktop or laptop?

You should be able to check your processor temp yourself in the BIOS. If you don't know how to get in there & poke around maybe it's best left to someone who does. It's very easy, maybe just a bit intimidating for people who've never done it before. I can furnish instructions if you want, in exchange for items/services to be specified at a later date ;)

I doubt it's power related, or the HD. A bad PS or flaky power would cause a hard reboot with no warning (i.e. no shutdown sequence). A bad HD would give error messages, maybe failure to boot - but again no nice shutdown sequence.

Are you sure you haven't updated a driver, installed software, or hardware lately? Sometimes this causes unexpected behavior in XP. Do you run anti-virus software & is it up to date?

When your machine boots up - do you get any error messages? Does it beep once during the POST test?

One last thing (and yeah, it's stupid) - in Control Panel/Display Properties/Screen Saver/Power - check to make sure your power saving settings aren't hosed up. Look at all the settings - try turning them all to "never" - disable hibernate support etc.

when it does it.... it just shuts off... all of a sudden... the screen goes black, and it's gone.

well... yesterday it did it 4 times. It did it the first time a few minutes after I started it up. It had been off for two days. The next few times were just random times during the evening. I was doing different things each time it happened. It's a desktop.
It's been on all day today, and it hasn't done it one time, so I don't know what is up.

Nothing new. I run Norton and it's up to date. I also check regularly for Windows updates and take care of those.

When your machine boots up - do you get any error messages? Does it beep once during the POST test?

No... when it boots up after this happens... it does a disc consistency check, but I don't know what that means, and I don't get any messages after it's done.

Farmgirl you have what is what we commonly refer to as a broken Confuser (see technical manual for Computer)..

I would suggest

using one of these:

http://www.slugger.com/TPX_BASEBALL/WOODBATS/images/tpxm110b.jpg

option one:
Take a random yet related less used electronic item and smash the Sheeot (see technical manual for Poo) out of it. Be certain to be with in eye sight ( ignorant people may claim it doesn't have eyes, but then how does it know what I am typing on the key board!)

While smashing the Sheeot (see Poo) out of the sacrificial electronic item call out loudly, "See that you, lump of ****! Now get to work or you're next!" Point bat at Confuser (see Computer) to assit in making point.

option 2:
Bypass option one completely. Find a reputable Confuser (see Computer) repair shop located, preferred in an urban area, but definatively in a high rise building (as the ability to pay the rent will reflect on the quality of the work). Carry said Confuser (see Computer) up the stairs (*not elevator). Utilize anger to pry open nearest window at highest point attainable and release Confuser (see Computer) into the atmosphere. It will either be the modern miracle we hear about or will conintinue in its stubborn ways. (Repeat as neccassary). Enter Confusershop (see manual for 7th Ring of Hell), ask about a model, decide on new product pull out the cash, look at huge wad of cash, come to senses, throw Confuser salesperson (See technical manual for Condescending Smartass Know-it-all) out of window, stop at USPS and buy stamps and library card.

Stoli got all technical. Allow me to translate for you farmgirl. When using the "percussive" maintenance or the "violent cold-boot" methods of trouble shooting there are usually three steps.
1. Threaten to use physical harm to the computer. (This is done by threatening to smash it to bits; or to take it to the local computer geek where it will sit among other broken computers and mountains of Taco Bell leftovers until a "tech" decides to gut it before overcharging you to wiggle the power button a little.)
2. Display of physical harm. (This is the above mentioned example of smashing an old VCR to pieces in the presence of the problem computer.)
3. Execution of physical measures. (Practicing your WWF moves or your swing with golf clubs or baseball bats is a technically approved trouble shooting measure and is theraputic as well.)
Keep in mind that if your computer experience involves holding the mouse in your hand like a remote and clicking it at the screen.. do not try and fix your own computer. If you have ever called a helpdesk because the "credit card thingy" won't take your credit card when you are trying to buy stuff online.... don't fix your own computer. If you have ever taken the monitor into the Dell store when they asked you to bring in the computer.... don't fix you own computer.
Good luck.. and let me know if you need anything else translated.

Stoli and Warpig... you guys crack me up. :)

I didn't have any problems yesterday, but I'm going to have the computer guy at school take a look anyway.

Well.... I'd say you'd have to ask Mocking that question, Trigger. I'm sure production is still on.... I'm ready to do my part, but that's just me. p-)
