You are right, some of these have historical/collectible value.
I wonder did soviet army used Degtyarev MG’s, Mosin carbines during invasion in Afghanistan cause sometimes they pop up there?

Some of these weapons are from the mid-1800s during the Russian and British clashes in Afghanistan... so I'm sure there's some old Russian weaponry as well.

I read about our army and i don't know what to think. On one hand we have a small and well trained army, that is good enough for current times. On the other hand, it is so tiny, that, even with mobilization of reservists, it could barely defend the country against limited attack. How many reservists have we trained since we canceled conscription? How many refresher exercises, like they have in Israel ,have these conscripts done? Back in the times of Kronkaitis, we had plans for two week refresher training every year, for reservists up to the age of 35 - obviously these plans never became true. Maybe with Pocius and Juknevičienė things will change for the better, and we will get reserves from Volunteer forces, but for some reason i doubt.
I just don't think that this is the right way to build an army - we buy gadgets, boats, transport planes and stuff like this for millions, but in fact, we're only trying to emulate those Western armies, that have never even seen real battle. It's like we're forming an army for parade and building hospitals in Afghanistan, not total National defence.
We need new rifles and radios, of course, but why buy planes and, especially, new armored vehicles? What is the purpose of that? To look more "western"? Why not buy more Javelins or Stinger launchers instead? How long will these armored vehicles survive when SU25 are controlling all roads and movement is possible only in night? Estonians are planning to buy NASAMS long range air defence missiles, based on experience of Georgian war. What are we planning? How long do our air defence "hands" reach? 8-10km, maybe - not enough. Through more clever money management we could probably afford more equipment.
Anyway, armchair general rant. Heres some God of war - hope not repost. Thread is lacking.

We used to have good and well trained armed forces till we joined the NATO in 2004. That was a political decission to eliminate all of teritorial deffence... whatewer. But I want to reashure you that there is at least one armed forces branch which is ready and well trained to fight to the end - SF :)

You are part of NATO now. On one hand, Lithuania would be defended by a force much, much stronger than any could-be mobilisation force of your own. On the other hand, membership requires the will and ability to come to another member state's aid, along with the rest of the pack, if ever needed. Hence the strive for interoperability with western forces.
That said, given the nutjob ruling Lithuania's neighbour to the East/South-east, basing the territorial defence on modern AA and AT in numbers seems like a good idea.

The most important thing is political and moral will to defend the homeland. No one will defend the nation which has no will to defend itself. And we have the will and we do have the means.

I understand, that NATO is a very powerful force and can scare off an attack. What worries me, is if Baltic states were ever attacked, they would be attacked when NATO is unable to help or is very buisy somewhere else and cannot send forces to support. Maybe in a situation where NATO has even collapsed and no longer exists - nothing is forever.
In this situation the Baltic countries would have to defend by their own means and today these are not enough.
Even if NATO can help, how quickly can they come? You are from the military, if i understand correctly, and you know how much planing and preparation it takes to move just one battalion from Denmark to Lithuania. And would Danes and Germans, and others be truly willing to fight bravely against superior numbers of the enemy for a country they have never even seen? I doubt.
From here comes the problem of Lithuanian military - our army has been so prepared, that NATO is expected to come almost instantly and all our soldiers would have to do, is to ambush a few tanks untill Germans or someone else comes. Our politicians think, that we no longer need ability to defend ourselves - all fighting would be over in a few days.
For SOF, i can say, that i agree that our special forces are among the best in the World, but sometimes you just need five thousand people to defend a city. Our entire professional army is smaller than that, if im not mistaken.

Countries have not been attacked, but it's NATO policy to not accept countries, that can have a war.
However, if you look at NATO in battle and larger conflicts, then actions speak louder than words - Spanish withdrawal from Iraq, Netherlands withdrawal from Afghanistan, several strange incidents in Yugoslav countries. Today, to me NATO looks not like Guderians "iron fist" from back 1988, but more like a finger poking and seeing what happens. If real danger shows up separate members start to withdraw.
But i must admit, that NATO has provided us with very important training for our army and other Baltic countries. We also get good weapons for free. That is what matters.

While that is true, I think it's safe to say that NATO will be around for a substantial time to come and if it isn't, there will be an EU alternative. Member states, especially the ones with smaller economies, should be spending their money on developing their countries rather than boosting their territorial defences as long as they are protected by the alliance.
In this situation the Baltic countries would have to defend by their own means and today these are not enough.

Being from the military, as you put it, I also understand that an attack wont come out of the blue. Tensions will rise, readiness states will change, units will deploy. The days of wars breaking out with no warning are over. BTW, I have seen Lithuania and I like Kaunas - in fact, I used to stay there when I trained some of your fine officers :) Denmark and the Baltic states have strong political and military relations and I think we'd defend you as we'd defend any NATO country.

Doubt that. In case of limited aggression against one of Baltic countries unit concentration can easily be hidden under preplanned exercise “maskirovka”. Second and even more important argument is that our politicians will never allow to raise readiness level. I am 99% sure that they will choose "to hide their heads in sand". :-(

We used to be. After the Cold War ended and we disbanded our mobilisation defence, our defence forces have moved towards deployability and away from static/mobile defence. As such, we don't have plans for defending our territory with the military but obviously our fighting force could be "deployed" at home if need ever be. Our "total defence", including our Home Guard, is geared towards point defence and as such only useful against sabotage and raids.

Yes, this is exactly how it happens. A good idea comes, again, from Israel. If i know correct, there, a military commander can call limited mobilization without permission from politicians. A good idea for small countries.
I am in the military for 16 years rigfht now. Don't won't to go deep into all speculations what will be and what woun't. The citizen will to defend his homeland is crucial after all. So, let's do it here and now. PS> Grobuonis good luck :)

Quite possibly - nobody wants to send the wrong signals when tensions rise. Luckily, your politicians don't control the rest of us. What I meant was that the general readiness state of NATO would change, preparing to move at a much shorter notice than usual if there were to be indications of an attack on a member state. The doctrine also is to deploy sufficient forces to a threatened area before open hostilities break out in order to deter, attack or defend according to the situation.

For the gentelmen, who advocate teritorial defense, while being in NATO. You forget one simple and basic fact - the funding of our armed forces is a sort of disgrace. It barelly reached 246 mln euro this year and you talk about teritorial defense..
Don't like ships/planes much? Fine - tell that to NATO HQ, they can say, they don't like this air police mission as well. I bet old ships and aircraft with 50s technology, high maintenence costs and cracks (in An26) would do just fine in NATO operations<sarcasm>. And just to remind, that those big ones have been acquired much earlier, in the "fat" years. The priorities are set for the present needs. And the present needs are not the imeadiate necessity to stop an invassion, that is upon us, but to provide everything necessarry for the common good - NATO readiness and present action (mission). We can't eaqually spare for both at the same time, unfortunatelly.
The core of teritorial defense - Home guard has so little training nowadays, that one can only guess about the readiness. All those dandy words about the will and patriotism SOF are fine, but when it comes to reality, it's all about what can you spare, realy. And then comes the question from WHAT can you take and give to defense? It would be most unpopular decission nowaday
As for NATO guarantees - yes they are most welcomed and fine, yet in theory can not be trusted by 100%, thus a strong and capable armed forces, that could hold off anyone for a while
God damn it whay don't you just believe that what I just sad :D (sarcasm) There is some truth in your words, maybe SF don't believe that it would be political will to fight, maybe it is the reason why SF is trying to aquire AA and antitank defence wpns... maybe. We can talk a lot about the problems, budget sortages, e.t.c. IMHO the one thing that keeps our EN at state is our will to fight. And thouse are not just dandy words, but only the real situation would proove it. I remember in 2004 we where drinking shampane when we have joined the NATO, I was in Kosovo with BALTSQN 8 at that time, but when we came home we found destroed our teritorial defence sistem that we had been building for years... Couple of years ago Gen Tutkus sad - our armed forces are like a wolf - SF are the tooth and everybody else is the tail :D In the real life NATO guarantees are just fine, but it will take some time for them to start working, so in this gap LITH armed forces will be operating. Do you know how long it will take? I don't. Anyway lets stay positive :)

A woolf example is pretty much a reflexion of reality. If SF is the teeth, then the rest of the army (I beg to differ here) is the body, not the tail. Body that can or can not fight, withstand a punch for a time when help comes, that protects civilians and government. Wether it can do that or not depends how you feed the woolf.
Woolf itself is a good metaphor of what our armed forces realy are. Baisically it's Iron Woolf brigade with support units. That's pretty much it of our fighting force, I realy doubt that paper brigades that would be created in case of war by mobilizing people, would stand against any prepared and planed operation. That is without virtually any reserve training, equipment (I take it you know the our logistics situation and folks who operate them).
But then again - you want more teeth, more training for reserve brigades, more equipment, more AA, AT etc - that costs. A lot actually. And neither the current budget of 0,9 % of GDP, neither the poor-mans 1% that MoD is asking for is not enough to satisfy the mentioned needs. All that despite the talks about the NATO requirement and political aproval of 2% GDP.

More bad news today. At press conf our defense minister and head of the army told that if the budget for the next year will not stabilize and receive additional funds, missions may suffer. That is Afghanistan mission might be scraped sooner than thought (originally in 2013). While pacifist and 5th column folks cheer and are having an orgasm day, the head of the army privately said, that they will try to keep the mission going whatever it takes. Bad news is then, that this will be done at the cost of Home Guard (KASP) which (half of it) will receive no training whatsoever for the next year. That really sucks :(

Staff missions in Kabul and Kandahar will continue, there have been no signs of the Dutch Airwing(much needed F-16's and AH-64D's for CAS throughout Afghanistan) withdrawing, SF continues deploying into hotspots. Like Sp2c said, there has been a withdrawal from Uruzgan, and while the majority of Dutch troops will indeed be returning home, we remain in Afghanistan with a sizeable contigent while many only provide token contributions to NATO's most important operation in a decade. There has been talk about a smaller redeployment to Afghanistan in the coming years, should the need arise, and similarly there have been rumours of plans for a peace enforcing mission in Africa.
Don't forget Afghanistan is not the only commitment The Netherlands has in the GWOT and NATO.

I don't understand where our people got this idea, that our country is undefendable. In some countries, that are much farther from a potential aggressor, people are furious when government does not give enough money for defence. I think this has to do something with out national character.
Also, doing missions at expense of KASP is unacceptable, in my mind. LITHSOF are doing their job - leave them and bring back hospital builders and newspaper deliverymen to practice anti-tank defence instead.

What’s your opinion about them? MG4 vs FN Minimi
Or maybe (MG4 + FN Minimi) vs FN MAG (Ksp 58)?
I would prefere parra minimi. More comfortable and I just like it. but bouth are wery good. Ksp is still good but we need newer version of FN. And it is not comperable with MG4/minimi couse it has different purpose and task.

Today we celebrate Restoration of Independence Day. Act of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania was signed on March 11, 1990.
On that occasion I post some pictures of Forest Brothers that there fighting against soviet occupants.

It is basic Dzik from AMZ. And the robot is from PIAP. Just very few examples (apart from Radmor's 3501 radios) of Polish hardware that Lithuania decided to buy. Lost market.

Yes and no. The chassis is a former Bundeswehr vehicle but it was later upgraded by FFG to LBPz. The BW does not operate this type; AFAIK Lithuania is the sole operator of this model.

http://www.europaeische-sicherheit.de/Ausgaben/2006/2006_05/Umschau/2006,05,umschau.html
Leichter Bergepanzer M113 der FFG
Flensburg.

Rockets are interesting but I would rather see them developing smart 120 mm mortar ammunition similar to STRIX.

They can hardly develop anything smarter than mortar simulators - any guidance system requires twice the investment they get. With that they can develop unguided rockets. I guess for training purposes (if we had enough Stinger and RBS missiles that is), maybe for helicopters. However not something smarter than that. Hell I'd be glad if they could make a universal surface to surface launched smart missile, but I guess that ain't so easy.

At the end we will buy such ammunition from Sweden or someone else. Price will include part of development costs. Taxpayers instead of feeding our scientists will feed someone abroad.

Yet the past 20 years should have proven quite strongly, that neither the taxpayers, nor the government are willing to invest into such developments (that would be a lot for reinventing bicycle). Whatever happened with that ammo factory - still working to minus after so much investments. And yet we still have to buy ammo from abroad.

That's just Great!
but damn, in near future, we need to replace those M113's with some wheeled APC's/IFV's(PATRIA's with 30mm guns?)... hopping for a better days and greater military budget. The same for helicopters(Black hawk's/Cougars?) and 5.56mm LMG's(like MG4/Minimi's).
Our navy is still on upgrading phase or it's already been done? Because we purchased 3 patrol boats, minesweepers and a logistic ship. So if it's already been done, expenditure for navy will be much smaller.
Does our ministry of defence has plans for medium ranged(20-25km ranged missiles) SAM's ?
More ATGM's like JAVELIN's?
We also need mobile artillery! depending on what kind of APC/IFV chassis will be chosen - with an automatic 120mm mortar inside(or in turret) - PATRIA AMOS or NEMO.
Other question - MANPAD's. How many STINGER's and RBS-70 we got?
Wishing for a fast and mobile battalion groups, protected by mobile SAM systems and with mobile artillery support... But that's just my thought's.
^^^
You are joker man, there is nothingin in the budget, no money no funy. Sad sad future for armed forces in next five years.

Are those 70s Unimogs and 105mm guns you received from Denmark back in the day, still in use? AFAIK, you got approx. 100 old Unimogs around 2003. Is that correct?
AurimasLT
06-29-2011, 03:45 PM
Actually ex Danish 105 mm howitzers still are main weapon of artillery battalion. There are no plans to replace them in near future.
Old Unimogs are also used to some extent.

What M-60? It’s MG3.
M-16 is not their standard weapon either. It’s used just for training purpose.

Whups, my bad. I have mistaken it , it's MG3 :/ but i think that we received a small number of M60
And about those mortars(Tampela 120mm mortar?) in M-113. It's called M-113A1 G panzermorser, that we got from germany?
Nice to have some mobile indirect fire support, apart from our relatively static(ex. danish) 105mm M-101A1 howitzers.
