At my school, the ZBT guys were really cool, and the DTD guys were the rich-ahole-frat from Animal House, and the DU guys were the missing link in the evolutionary chain between primate and human. Didn't have a real good sense of the others.

And in Massachussetts sororities aren't allowed to live in houses because of 200-year-old laws that consider sororities to be a form of brothel. Not much I can say there.

I was going to pledge ATO at my school, but these guys were like the ones on animal house, they lost their charter, then booted off campus,

To my non US friends. Fraternities and Sororities are kind of like a club for rich, spoiled kids going to college. The members pay a large amount of money to belong to this "club" to be in a nationwide brotherhood, and live in a usually fancy old colonial type mansion close to campus, and have big parties.

When you start college you can apply to any one you want but they have to ask you to join. Once accepted there are many strange hazing rituals to become a brother/sister.

Most (not all) male members are total cocks who need regular ass kickings. Most (not all) female members are total bitches who will only sleep with you if you tell them your a Concorde pilot.
I live in a large college town, so I get to deal with them on a regular basis.

Hazing isn't allowed here. I am pretty sure most universities codemn hazing and have strict guidelines against any type of activity.

Fraternities aren't for rich people just because they have dues. Eh, you forget about tuition? I guess college is just for rich, spoiled people too then?

Well of course Universities dont condone hazing, but does it happen? Hell yes.

Well tuition can be paid in a manner of ways, student aid, scholarships, loans etc. $2000 plus a semester for Fraternity fees comes out of your pocket.

NcDeuce Im not knocking Fraternities, Ive had great times at many frat parties, and have many friends who were frat boys. I just think theyre all cocks ;)

Fraternities IMHO are in general a bunch of bull****. They talk about brotherhood, loyalty , honor and all that noble stuff, and they totally rip you down and buiold you back up , sorta like the military, except once your accepted in its all about getting ****faced drunk and ****ing sluts. Now why would anyone want to put up with all the **** they have to go thorugh to be accepted as a "brother" when I can do those same things outside a fraternity?( not that I do, mind you). I guess it satisfies people's need to feel like they belong to something important.

This thread has given me a good idea. Recruiting programsw at colleges should advertise the military as the next step above fraternities.
" US Army: All the fun of Fratenities, but you get to blow stuff up!! (And bang exotic foreign chicks woot ) ".

Maybe then the US wouldn't have a shortage of new recruits.

Maybe I should clear something up, in no way did I mean to compare the US military to fraternies. On a scale of 1 to ten on my respect meter fraternity members get about a 3. US servicemen get a 10+. woot

I'm seeing a lot of fraternity opinions from people who weren't or aren't Greek. If you haven't been Greek then you have no right to comment! Leave the frat comments to the BTDTs!!!! Right?

Just kidding, but Srcim - the cost of your fraternity greatly depends on where you go. I went to a state university in the South (The Univ. of X) for undergrad and fraternities on the whole are very expensive - even more than the amount you listed. My uncle was Pike president for 2 years at one of the smaler regional universities in TN and his dues paled in comparison. All depends on the school. Also, a lot of fratermnities at public universities in the South involve paying for meals and that jacks up the price greatly. I know this is true at UT, UF, UGA, UA, Auburn, etc.

Also, I feel it is my duty to remind everybody that the stated goal of ALL fraternities is public service and that the chicks and parties are not what attracts college aged men to join.

NC deuce - don't you go to Austin Peay in Clarksville? Good luck with Sigma Chi. A couple of guys I went to high school with were in that ag frat you joke (in the early 1990s) about when they went to APSU. They liked it, but then again they wore a lot of cowboy boots and wrangler jeans.

I agree with you.

There are pros and cons to both going greek or taking the independent route. Funny how some people who tout the fraternal aspect of the military poo poo college fraternal organizations.

If you ask me, never been in the frat and will, but have friends that are there and I doubt those MTV shows about them are far from the truth. Military is a whole different ballgame, different people with different goals, I wouldn't compare them. But the selection process with stuff like: "I'm not gonna vote for him/her cause he/she didn't say hi/smile to me"... is idiotic, at least to me. In my humble opinion, fraternities are generally for people who just can't find any friends or something to do, who need assurance that they will always have friends no matter what, with exceptions of course. Thats just me, throw rotten tomatoes if you want
