One of the guys I work with was USMC 1966-1969, with a tour in Vietnam. I like to tease him about his age. He is cool about it.

Hard to tell. It has the bolt forward assist of the M16A1, and yet has the open ****g muzzle flash hider of the M16.

Initially I thought that was the M16A1 because it has the
forward assist, and the original M16 does not. Perhap it
was M16A1 but with the flash suppresor of the M16??

M16A1. Just seems he didn't get his replacement flash hider/suppressor yet, or it's one made out of some older parts like the M16s in the hands of some British soldiers a while back.

Actually, if you look closely its the three-****g, not the original tulip FH (there is a slight difference, the easiest way to see it is that the three ****g looks more conical, where as the initial FH was pretty cylindrical after the rifle grenade rings). The three-****g was supposed to be more closed than the original tulip style one which was ****e to collecting vegitation. Of course they found the three-****g was just as bad, and issued what people call either the A1 or more correctly the birdcage FH.
The three-****g appears on both XM16E1s and A1s from what available photographic evidence exists.

I know Marines in Vietnam had pretty darn ruff, especially from 1965 to about 1967. For one thing they had those real heavy-laden uniforms and had to carry the M-14(which Im not trying to say is a bad rifle cause its not)but it just put more weight on the grunts who had to hump it through the jungle. I always find it amusing though that the Cav say that it saved the Marines up North more than anyone else and the Marines say they saved the Cav also. Guess its just a war thing.
