It's my understanding that camera phones are prohibited from being taken on ANY defense force property.

There isnt anything uber secret in those NZ lav's are there? I wouldnt have thought so considering the governments penchant for scrimping on costs?

Contract for army vehicles signed

MOWAG AG in Kreuzlingen, Switzerland develops, designs and manufactures state-of-the-art, special vehicles for military applications. More than 10,000 armoured wheeled vehicles of MOWAG Piranha, MOWAG Eagle and Duro are in operation worldwide. MOWAG became a business unit of General Dynamics Corporation in 2003 and employs approximately 560 people.

Prime Minister Helen Clark today signed the contract for the New Zealand Army's biggest equipment purchase for 30 years – 105 new light armoured vehicles.

Helen Clark and Keith Zerebecki, the general director of MOWAG - General Motors Defense of Canada, the company that will build the vehicles, signed the contract at a ceremony in the Beehive.

Helen Clark and Defence Minister Mark Burton said they were delighted the contract had been finalised, as for too long the army had been the Cinderella of the New Zealand Defence Force.

"Our substantial commitment in recent years to international peacekeeping activities has shown up serious deficiencies in the army's equipment. The armoured personnel carriers the army use are too old to be reliable.

"When participating in dangerous peacekeeping missions, such as in East Timor, it is critical that we back up the professionalism of our land force with decent equipment.

"The decision to buy the new light armoured vehicles reflects the government's aim of ensuring New Zealand can perform well those functions which dominate our deployments and meet our needs," Helen Clark and Mark Burton said.

The contract provides for delivery over the period January 2003 to May 2004. The value of the contract, based on current exchange rates, is $483.74 million, excluding GST. The overall project cost, which includes infrastructure, additional equipment and a contingency sum, plus GST, is $652.83 million.

The ministers welcomed the provision of some New Zealand industry involvement in the overall project. An industry programme obligation with a minimum value of $7 million is included in the contract with Mowag General Motors Defense.

Really? It would hardly be a strictly enforced rule other than sensitive areas like JFHQ I would think.

I'm pretty sure camera phones found/used on Defense Force property is a chargeable offense, but as you and 2/1 mentioned(and as far as I know) isn't exactly enforced.

The NZ LAV III and the ASLAV are two different vehicles. The NZLAV is bigger and is meant to accomodate 7 fully equipped troops in the back. The ASLAV seems to be more of a scout vehicle and I doubt it would accomodate more than four dismounts in the back. Anyone else out there able to confirm how many troops are actually stationed in the rear of an ASLAV?

Personnel Carrier holds seven troops.

The "Regular" Recon variant has three crew.
