What a coincidence! I know someone who has that tattoo.p-)

I saw a lot of patriotic type tattooos amongst our blokes. Australian flags, Southern Crosses, Eureka stockade/southern cross flags, Made in Australia stamps, boxing kangaroos, Ned Kelly tatts, rising suns (our one not the Japanese style), blood group/regimental number combo, regimental badges ect ect.

For those thinking about getting one I highly encourage you to rethink it. I was tempted a few times but then I thought of how stupid old men with tatoos look. They look like the holocaust survivors with the ID numbers on their forearms. And unless you plan on dying at the age of 30...................
Plus, it just doesn't look professional and it does not make you look like a badass. So, just remember to take that into consideration the next time your out on the town throwin' a few back with some service buddies and you walk past that tatoo parlor.

The old man has a great tattoo on his shoulder, a snarling bulldog wearing a Green Beret with Royal Marines Commando over it.

I'm getting a tattoo myself but it won't be military related...

Would like to revive this discussion, curious myself. Always avoided getting tattoos for the reasons mentioned earlier in here, but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy them so to say. Keep 'em coming.

Nothing wrong with getting tattoos whilst in the Military, unless they jeopardise future career options/advancements.

I won't go below the Elbow personally, but that is just what I plan.

Mine are going on my legs next, arm already done.

The original eagle (on the beret) faces also the left side of the circle of leaves, so he had to put the tattoo on the other arm if it should always face the body.

Yeah, that one makes it face away from the body, so therefore it's back wards (in regards to tattoo standards). But since it is not an original design (taken from the beret) it can't matter than much, unless Match can shed some more light on it.

Yup.

Should have either; put it on your other arm, or reversed the image.

On your arm and legs, everything should face forwards, (front of body) or it's going to look odd.

Same thing with chest pieces.

Shoulder blades are a bit more subjective.

It's just something you learn in the biz.

Bottom line is this though, if you like it, who gives a rats ass if it's following some stupid rule.

The flag I have on my arm is facing the way it does on a Service Uniform, I have seen a couple blokes with it facing the other way, like they are moving backwards, quite odd looking. But then again some people think mine is funny looking, until I explain it to them.

I thought officers weren't supposed to get tatoos?They should be tatoo-clean when they join the Force and enter the Officer's Academy. By who said they cannot have tatoos later?

PS. I've been on USS LPD-15 "Proud Lion" Ponce (http://www.ponce.navy.mil) back in 1993, serving with Hellenic Army's Marines co-operation with USMC & US Navy and I must tell you that the majority of US Navy and USMC officers had tatoos on their body. As for the 2nd in class ship's commanding officer (he was a US Navy O-5 CDR (http://navysite.de/navy/cdr-sl.gif) or O-6 CPT (http://navysite.de/navy/capt-sl.gif) as far as I remember) was a living wallpaper with tatoos covering his body from neck to the toes!
